Working in close partnership with the Head of Stakeholder Activation, the Board of Directors, the Resource Development Advisory Group, and other departments, the Director develops and implements strategies to increase individual giving, membership revenue, and corporate sponsorships.
The successful candidate will:
Provide both strategic vision and strong execution by using creativity, data-based decisions, and relationship management skills to grow the organization's philanthropic revenue. Demonstrate the ability to design and implement sustainable fundraising strategies within a complex organization that relies significantly on earned income, balancing immediate revenue needs with long-term philanthropic growth. Remote candidates will be considered; however, preference will be given to those based in or near New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, or DC Metro (HQ), who can commit to a flexible hybrid schedule, including some on-site days each month.
Responsibilities:
Strategy/Leadership Develop and execute strategic fundraising plan aligned with organizational priorities In partnership with the Head of Stakeholder Activation, establish annual and multi-year fundraising goals and track performance against key metrics Stay current with industry ethics and best practices in resource development and ensure organization-wide implementation of those standards Identify opportunities to diversify funding streams and grow philanthropic support Individual Giving Manage and grow a portfolio of major donors ($1,000+), major gift prospects, and planned gift prospects through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship Design and implement strategies to increase donor acquisition, retention, and upgrading Create and maintain ongoing relationships with donors and major giving prospects Partner with Board leadership and volunteers to promote legacy giving opportunities and inspire commitments through the Legacy Challenge Manage donor database, analyze giving data for strategic and implementation planning Grants/Corporate Giving Develop grant proposals for a small number of aligned grant opportunities Partner with HI USA's leadership to secure sponsorships from vendors Work with Executive Team and Board to identify and be responsive to corporate funding opportunities Donor/Member Communications and Events Translate organizational priorities into compelling, fundable initiatives and develop messaging to communicate these initiatives to donors Lead development of compelling fundraising, stewardship, and membership materials In partnership with the Head of Stakeholder Activation, design and implement donor cultivation and stewardship events Data Strategy Oversee donor/member data management, reporting, and performance analysis to inform strategic decision-making and utilize data insights to refine fundraising strategies Manage the Resource Development and Membership Coordinator and offer guidance and oversight on gift and membership processing and development operations
Skills/Qualifications:
Passion for the mission of Hostelling International USA. Bachelor's Degree required. Experience and proficiency in utilizing donor databases and fundraising analytics Results oriented with 5+ years related experience in non-profit leadership and fund development Experience working with nonprofit Boards or Fundraising Committees strongly preferred Demonstrated success securing major gifts and managing donor portfolios Experience in planned giving preferred. CFRE certification or equivalent professional experience preferred Knowledge of and ability to adapt best practices to facilitate development goals Strong relationship building and personal solicitation skills required Strong project management skills to facilitate planning, leading and managing projects, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior management and the Board of Directors Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail Highly persuasive with a genuine demeanor and exceptional written/verbal communication skills essential
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This role primarily involves working in office space or remote environment using a computer. The employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment, and communicate effectively (talk and hear). The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, or move about the workspace. Minimal lifting may be required. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus for computer work.
