Job Description
NOW HIRING - ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
| Owensboro, KY Inventory | Operations | Service | Desking | GM Development Track This position is being built for someone who intends to become a General Manager. Vantacar is building a three-person leadership structure designed to scale our dealership and eventually additional locations. We're hiring an Assistant General Manager whose primary responsibility is simple: Own the product and the process from acquisition until it's sold. That is a much bigger responsibility than managing an inventory spreadsheet.YOUR SIDE OF THE BUSINESS
The AGM will take primary responsibility for: Vehicle acquisition Auction and wholesale sourcing Trade evaluation Inventory mix Inventory cost Aging and turn Recon Mechanical workflow Service operations Parts and vendor coordination Vehicle readiness Pre-sale inspections Merchandising readiness Wholesale decisions Deal desking Operational problem solving You need to understand what happens to a dollar from the moment we purchase a vehicle until the moment we deliver it.CRITICAL THINKING IS PARAMOUNT
We aren't looking for someone whose management style consists of forwarding problems to the GM. Bring solutions. If recon is taking nine days when it should take four, determine why. If vehicles repeatedly need repairs after they're front-line ready, identify where the inspection process is failing. If aging is increasing, don't simply discount everything.Determine whether the problem is:
Acquisition. Pricing. Vehicle selection. Recon time. Merchandising. Lead generation. Sales execution. Or something nobody else has recognized yet. Solve causes—not symptoms. You'll have processes and checklists. But we expect you to think beyond them.GOOD ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH UNTIL IT'S YOUR BEST
—ANDIT'S THE BEST
We're building a high-accountability operation. That doesn't mean screaming at people. It means establishing a standard and refusing to slowly lower it because mediocre execution becomes convenient. A vehicle isn't ready because someone checked a box. It's ready when it's ready. An inventory problem isn't solved because someone explained it. It's solved when the numbers change.THE THREE-PERSON LEADERSHIP TEAM
You will work directly underneath the GM / Operator and alongside the GSM / Sales & Customer Experience Manager. The GM owns the overall dealership. You own inventory and operations. The GSM owns sales execution and customer experience. There will naturally be overlap. You will desk deals. The GSM will provide market and customer feedback. The GM will become involved when necessary. But we're intentionally creating defined ownership of responsibilities so three managers aren't standing around trying to manage the same problem.YOU WILL HELP BUY CARS
Vehicle acquisition will become an important part of this position. You need to develop an understanding of: Market value Retail demand Days supply Recon exposure Transportation Mechanical risk Historical performance Vehicle mix Margin potential Exit strategy We don't want someone who buys cars because they personally like them. We want someone who buys inventory because the data and opportunity justify owning it.SERVICE & RECON
You'll help manage the entire pre-sale pipeline. The objective is straightforward:
Buy correctly → inspect quickly → repair intelligently → merchandise properly → sell efficiently. Every unnecessary day costs money. Every missed mechanical issue costs money. Every bad acquisition costs money. Every vehicle sitting unnoticed on the lot represents capital that isn't working. You need to understand that.DEAL DESKING
This is not exclusively a back-of-house operations position. You'll desk deals and assist management with: Deal structure Trade evaluations Gross protection Finance considerations Inventory decisions Approvals and exceptions You should understand how operational decisions affect the sales desk—and how decisions made at the desk affect inventory.YOUR CAREER PATH
We're deliberately creating upward mobility: GSM → AGM → GM / Operator The AGM should be actively learning the GM's responsibilities. Financial performance. People. KPIs. Leadership. Lender relationships. Marketing. Strategy. Scaling. The objective isn't to have the same AGM forever. The objective is to develop someone capable of eventually running another dealership. As we expand, advancement should come from the leadership bench we're building now whenever possible.WHO WE WANT
Automotive management experience is strongly preferred. Experience with some combination of the following is highly valuable: Used-car management Inventory management Automotive service Recon Vehicle acquisition Auctions Appraisals Deal desking Independent dealerships Wholesale Automotive finance But experience alone won't get you the position. We are hiring intelligence, judgment, work ethic, accountability and the ability to solve problems. We're not desperate to fill the chair. We're willing to be thorough to find someone capable of growing beyond it. When applying, tell us about an inventory, recon, service, or operational problem you personally identified and solved—and what changed afterward. Apply confidentially by sending your resume and references. We will only respond to those who email or call in to the point of contacts below.Email:
