Job Description

Position Summary The Executive Director serves as the primary administrator of the Historical Society of Glastonbury. Will work in close partnership with the volunteer Board of Directors, committees and staff to sustain and grow the organization's mission of preserving and sharing local history. This is a hands-on, working role responsible for day-to-day operations, basic administrative functions, volunteer coordination, and modest fundraising efforts. The Executive Director ensures that the organization remains active, financially stable, and visible within the community. Key Responsibilities Operations & Administration Manage the day-to-day operations of the society, often independently. Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries, researchers, and visitors. Maintain organizational records, files, and basic systems (membership lists, calendars, etc.). Support and communicate regularly with the Board of Directors; attend meetings and provide updates. Help implement Board decisions and priorities. Financial Oversight Work with the Treasurer to track income and expenses. Assist in preparing a simple annual budget. Monitor cash flow and ensure bills and obligations are paid on time. Support basic financial reporting to the Board. Fundraising & Membership Coordinate fundraising efforts such as annual appeals, local sponsorships, and events. Assist with grant applications (as capacity allows). Maintain and grow membership through outreach and communication. Acknowledge donations and maintain donor records. Programs & Community Presence Coordinate lectures, small exhibits, or community events (often with volunteers). Support engagement and coordination with Glastonbury Public Schools as needed Promote programs through newsletters, local media, and social media. Represent the society at community events and build local partnerships. Collections & Facilities (Oversight Role) Oversee the general care and organization of collections, often with volunteer help. Ensure basic stewardship practices are followed (safe storage, documentation). Monitor the condition of any buildings or spaces used by the society and report needs to the Board. Volunteer Coordination Recruit, schedule, and support volunteers. Match volunteers with roles such as research, docents, events, collections, or administration. Foster a welcoming and collaborative volunteer environment. Qualifications Interest in local history, preservation, or community engagement. Experience in nonprofit, administrative, or community-based work preferred. Comfortable working independently with limited staff support. Strong organizational and communication skills. Basic financial literacy (budget tracking, simple reporting). Ability to work effectively with volunteers and a governing Board. Familiarity with social media, email communication, and basic office tools. Grant writing or fundraising experience is a plus, but not required. Work Schedule To be determined Some evening or weekend hours required for meetings and events. Compensation Hourly wage or stipend based on experience and organizational resources. $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
