POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) holds overall strategic and operational responsibility for THRIVE's staff, programs, finances, and execution of its mission. The ED serves as THRIVE's chief executive and principal public representative, leads a senior team of Clinical, and Medical Directors, and partners closely with the Board on governance, strategy, and fundraising.

The ED is expected to hold this work with the seriousness it deserves: THRIVE's clients are survivors of severe trauma, and the organization's effectiveness depends on services that are clinically sound, culturally responsive, and delivered by a team that is well supported.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director's responsibilities fall into six areas.

1. Board Partnership & Strategic Leadership

Serve as the Board's primary staff partner: prepare meeting materials, support committee work, and provide the timely, accurate information on mission, finances, program outcomes, and risk that the Board needs to govern well.

Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors, including partnering on recruitment, orientation, and ongoing development of board members.

Ensure THRIVE has a long-range strategy that advances its mission, and that the organization makes consistent and timely progress toward it.

Develop organizational and financial plans with the Board and carry out the plans and policies it authorizes.

Ensure THRIVE carries out its mission with integrity and in conformity with the highest ethical standards in all respects.

Use data to inform decisions about clients, programs, and staffing, and build the organization's capacity to do so.

Maintain official records and documents and ensure the organization's continuity through documented systems and succession planning.

2. Fundraising & Development

Plan and implement THRIVE's annual and long-term fundraising strategy, with an emphasis on revenue diversification and reducing concentration risk.

Prepare or oversee all funding applications and proposals for federal, state, county, city, foundation, corporate, and individual support.

Research and cultivate new donor relationships, with particular attention to major gifts.

Steward existing funders through accurate reporting, site visits, renewals, and consistent relationship management.

Grow individual giving, including the annual appeal and any donor events or campaigns.

Engage and support the Board in its fundraising role, including introductions, cultivation, and solicitation.

3. Financial Management, Compliance & Administration

Prepare the annual organizational budget for Board approval, along with program and grant budgets.

Ensure that adequate funds and cash flow are available for THRIVE to carry out its work, managing restricted and unrestricted funds and building operating reserves.

Hold overall responsibility for finances and accounting, and ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting.

Oversee the monthly close in partnership with the contracted accounting firm, using Dext and QuickBooks; ensure expenses are allocated to the appropriate funding sources and that reports for contract reimbursement and Board review are produced on schedule.

Review and submit financial reports and requests for reimbursement, manage accounting and audit vendors.

Prepare all documentation required for the annual audit and Form 990, and review both with the Board of Directors.

Serve as approver for payables in Bill.com within Board-approved authority limits, maintaining clear separation between the preparation and the approval of payments.

Work with the bookkeeper and Board Treasurer to maintain strong internal controls, appropriate segregation of duties, and sound financial practices.

Execute contracts with grantors, contractors, and other partners, and ensure obligations under them are met.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including federal award requirements: allowable costs and cost principles under the Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), time-and-effort documentation, subrecipient and vendor monitoring, single audit readiness, and timely programmatic and financial reporting to ORR and other federal, state, and local funders.

Maintain the organization's insurance coverage, registrations, and risk management practices.

4. Program Oversight & Quality

Collaborate with THRIVE's Clinical and Medical Directors, and Program Manager to design, deliver, and improve programs, and to assess staff and organizational effectiveness.

Ensure services remain trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and linguistically accessible, including adequate interpretation capacity.

Oversee outcome measurement and evaluation, ensuring the organization tracks what matters to clients and funders and uses the results to improve services.

Ensure compliance with clinical, privacy, and confidentiality requirements, including HIPAA, licensure and credentialing, and mandatory reporting obligations.

Ensure programs are appropriately staffed and resourced relative to caseload and client acuity, and that referral and intake processes function well.

Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of torture rehabilitation, and in the immigration and refugee policy environment affecting THRIVE's clients.

5. Internal Leadership, People & Culture

Recruit, supervise, develop, and evaluate the senior leadership team; develop or adapt job descriptions as needed.

Manage the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations.

Maintain a workplace culture that is communicative, cooperative, and resourceful, and in which staff can raise concerns and expect to be heard.

Sustain practices that protect a clinical team doing trauma work from vicarious trauma and burnout, including adequate clinical supervision, manageable caseloads, meaningful use of paid time off, and modeling those norms as a leader.

Oversee staff professional development and support staff in reaching their professional goals.

Review compensation and benefits periodically for competitiveness and internal equity, and recommend adjustments to the Board.

6. External Relations & Community Partnership

Serve as THRIVE's chief spokesperson, representing the organization to agencies, funders, partner organizations, and the general public.

Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with other nonprofit organizations, government agencies, health systems, and the national consortium of torture treatment programs.

Oversee new and existing external partnerships, delegating relationship management within the organization where appropriate.

Oversee communications and public presence, website, email, social media, and print, to publicize THRIVE's activities, programs, and goals.

Advocate, within the limits appropriate to a 501(c)(3) organization, for policies and resources that serve survivors of torture.

Protect client privacy and dignity in all external communication and storytelling.
