The Recreation & Leisure Operations Manager provides day-to-day operational leadership and management support for Wai Kai's recreation programming and water-based activities, including Surf operations, Lagoon/Waterfront activities, and associated guest experiences. This role serves as a key operational leader responsible for supervising frontline teams, coordinating daily operations, supporting program development, and ensuring consistent execution of safety, service, and operational standards. Working closely with the Director of Recreation & Facilities, the Manager helps translate departmental strategy into daily operations while maintaining high-quality guest experiences and efficient team performance. The Recreation & Leisure Operations Manager oversees team development, scheduling, operational readiness, program implementation, and cross-department coordination to ensure the smooth delivery of Wai Kai's recreation offerings.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Program Oversight Provide day-to-day operational oversight for recreation programming across Surf operations, Lagoon/Waterfront activities, and related guest experiences. Ensure daily operational readiness including staffing levels, equipment availability, safety compliance, and activity coordination. Support the implementation and execution of new recreation programs, activities, and guest offerings. Monitor operational performance and guest experience metrics to identify areas for improvement. Assist the Director in developing operational plans and procedures that support department goals. Team Leadership & Staff Development Supervise and support recreation team members including Water Activity Safety Attendants and program staff. Lead onboarding, training, and ongoing development initiatives for recreation staff. Conduct regular team check-ins, performance discussions, and coaching sessions. Support performance management processes including feedback, corrective action, and documentation when necessary. Foster a positive team culture that prioritizes safety, collaboration, accountability, and guest service. Scheduling, Staffing & Workforce Coordination Oversee staff scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage across Surf, Lagoon, and Waterfront operations. Monitor labor utilization and assist in managing staffing levels based on operational demand. Review timekeeping and payroll accuracy in coordination with department leadership and HR. Support workforce planning initiatives including recruitment, interviews, and onboarding of recreation staff. Safety, Compliance & Risk Management Ensure safety protocols and operational procedures are consistently followed across all recreation activities. Maintain compliance with applicable safety standards, training requirements, and certifications. Assist in incident documentation, response coordination, and follow-up actions when needed. Promote a culture of safety awareness and proactive risk management among staff. Cross-Department Collaboration Collaborate with Sales & Marketing, Guest Experience, Facilities, and Food & Beverage teams to support programming, promotions, and events. Coordinate with Engineering and Facilities teams regarding equipment needs, maintenance requests, and operational readiness. Represent Recreation operations in internal meetings and provide operational updates to leadership. Operational Reporting & Performance Monitoring Track program performance, participation levels, guest feedback, and operational metrics. Provide regular operational updates and reports to the Director of Recreation & Facilities. Support department budget awareness by monitoring operational expenses and resource utilization. Guest Experience & Service Standards Ensure recreation programs deliver consistent, safe, and memorable guest experiences aligned with Wai Kai's service standards. Address guest concerns or operational issues promptly and professionally. Support team members in delivering engaging and high-quality recreation experiences. Operational Support Maintain working knowledge of frontline recreation roles and support operational coverage when needed. Assist during peak operational periods, special events, or staffing shortages to ensure continuity of service. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support departmental goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
: Minimum 3 years of experience in recreation, leisure, aquatic operations, or related fields. Previous supervisory or management experience in recreation, aquatics, or outdoor activity operations preferred. Experience managing teams, schedules, and operational logistics in a fast-paced guest environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Teams and basic administrative systems for scheduling, reporting, and communication. CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard certifications preferred or ability to obtain upon hire. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong leadership and team management skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage operational priorities while maintaining service quality and safety standards. Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities. Experience using administrative systems for scheduling, reporting, and team communication. Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments. Working Conditions / Physical Requirements This position is an on-site/in-person role not eligible for hybrid or remote work primarily based at Wai Kai in ʻEwa Beach, Hawaiʻi. Work is frequently performed outdoors in aquatic and recreation environments. Schedule flexibility required, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Pay:
