Job Description
Chief of Staff/Operations Director Full-Time | Exempt Our calling is simple: to offer God's abundant life to our most vulnerable neighbors through a ministry of help and hope. We step into the gaps with people who are hurting, meet their immediate physical needs, and walk alongside them as they restore dignity, rebuild community, and renew hope. We are seeking a Chief of Staff to serve as the operational right hand to our Executive Director. This is not a desk job. It is a boots-on-the-ground leadership position anchored in servant leadership and relationship-focused management. We believe that people thrive when they feel valued, supported, and heard. You will lead by walking alongside our team mentoring front-line staff, caring for our spaces, welcoming volunteers, and ensuring our shelter and housing operations reflect both practical excellence and Christ-centered grace. A Day in the Life While every day brings something unique, your daily rhythm centers on building relationships and removing obstacles for our team:
Morning:
You start on the floor, connecting face-to-face with the overnight and morning crews to check in on their well-being, celebrate resident milestones, and address any staffing gaps. Rather than managing from behind a screen, you lead a relational team huddle listening to concerns, offering practical encouragement, and setting a grounded, supportive tone for the shift.Mid-Day:
You walk through the Chosen Shelter, Choices Apartments, or Shekinah Apartments to connect with residents and inspect property upkeep alongside our maintenance team. When a local church group arrives to serve lunch or stock the pantry, you greet them warmly and help get them settled. If our Housing or Shelter Coordinator is out sick or a post is open, you step in without hesitation to handle resident intakes or tenant success coaching yourself.Afternoon:
You sit down with the Executive Director to align on daily priorities, then spend dedicated time one-on-one coaching a Support Specialist through a tough de-escalation scenario. You review upcoming staff schedules, ensure resident records are orderly, follow up with a facility repair contractor, and make sure evening staff have everything they need before heading home. What You'll Be Doing Practicing Servant Leadership :
Lead by influence, humility, and example. You view leadership as service investing in staff development, listening intentionally, and equipping team members to succeed in their roles.Relationship-Focused Staff Management:
Supervise, mentor, and coach our Support Specialists staff. You build trust through clear expectations, open communication, and fair, transparent enforcement of our HR guidelines and standards.Faithful Policy Oversight:
Enforce program guidelines, tenant expectations, and safety protocols as established by the team, balancing firm boundaries with relational grace so our spaces stay safe, clean, and peaceful.Hands-On Operational Backup:
Act as immediate operational coverage for the Housing Program Coordinator or Shelter Program Coordinator during absences, leaves, or position vacancies.Facilities & Logistics Stewardship :
Oversee routine property maintenance, safety inspections, vendor repairs, and inventory tracking for equipment, supplies, and in-kind food donations.Engaging Community & Volunteers :
Cultivate welcoming relationships with church groups, civic partners, court contacts, and local volunteers who serve alongside our ministry.Who You Are A Servant Leader's Heart:
A genuine passion for Serve City's Christian mission and a heart to serve individuals navigating homelessness and crisis with humility, dignity, and respect.Relational Leadership Style:
A management approach rooted in empathy, active listening, and relationship-building, paired with the ability to maintain healthy boundaries and clear accountability.Field Experience:
Solid leadership experience within homeless services, emergency overnight shelters, or supportive housing environments.Supervisory Background:
