Job Description

Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need (RICAN) is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to easing hunger and promoting dignity by providing meals, clothing, and other services in Southern Rhode Island. Reporting to the Executive Board of Directors, the Operations Director is responsible for leading and guiding a team of full and part-time employees and volunteers who assist in various capacities throughout the organization. The Operations Director is responsible for ensuring the successful operations of all components of the RICAN organization; managing a robust budget driven by donations and grant funding; representing RICAN at various fundraising events and to large donors; and serving on various special committees. This is a full-time, 40-hour position primarily on-site at our Charlestown location.
Responsibilities :
Operations Management:
The primary responsibilities are to oversee all operational functions of RICAN's food pantry, thrift shop, social services, and overall facility to ensure we are serving the community effectively and efficiently. Additional responsibilities include developing and implementing policies and procedures to optimize operations, track progress, and regularly communicating success and obstacles to the board, employees, and volunteers. To achieve these objectives, the Operations Director will handle the following key responsibilities: Ensure Food Pantry manager executes all operational functions according to job description, including but not limited to food rescue, ordering, and inventory management; client intake and interactions; distribution shift scheduling; volunteer management; pantry layout/design; required reporting; and more. Ensure Thrift Shop manager executes all operational functions according to job description, including but not limited to management and pricing of donated goods; monitoring retail trends; volunteer management; thrift shop layout/design; and more. Oversee Kindness Program Coordinator to ensure individual funding requests are examined closely and, when granted, responded to in a timely manner and adhering to program guidelines; recording and reporting of funds distributed and clients assisted. Ensure all Driver and Facility functions including facilitating the maintenance and repair of all buildings and equipment; ensuring compliance with all health and safety codes and regulations; and more. Learn and champion fundraising initiatives and special community events. Manage the portfolio of all existing grants, including writing grant renewals and required reporting and tracking. Expand RICAN's grant portfolio. Manage the budget by collaborating with the Executive Board and Treasurer to set appropriate guidelines and communicate these targets to the Thrift Shop and Food Pantry managers to empower them to operate within budget. Monitor and ensure that all operational policies (including health, safety, and facility procedures) are clearly documented, communicated, and followed.
People Management:
Recruit, train, and foster an inclusive team of staff and volunteers by establishing strong morale, clear goals, and performance standards in alignment with their job descriptions. Provide leadership to ensure RICAN's mission is consistently upheld. Be a role model. Demonstrate and encourage empathy, dignity, accountability, communication, and respect between employees, volunteers, clients, and customers. Communicate regularly with staff and volunteers to ensure awareness and engagement. Observe RICAN policies on all human resources related matters including hiring, pay rates, organizational changes, changes in job descriptions, and termination.
Strategic Business Development:
Serve as the face of RICAN, fostering consistent responsible growth of our client base in the community while ensuring RICAN's financial viability through budget management and reporting to the Board. Demonstrate forward-thinking in alignment with RICAN's goals. Represent RICAN in public capacities; appearing at Food Bank and other events to advocate for the organization while ensuring the message reaches those in need in our community. Build and foster relationships with donors, sponsors, and clients.
Board Relations:
Serve as primary liaison between staff, volunteers, and the Executive Board. Provide regular updates and monthly operational reports to the Executive Board. Attend Board meetings as requested.
Qualifications and Skills:
Possess a bachelor's degree (preferred) or equivalent, demonstrated non-profit management experience (required). Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively collaborate across all levels of the organization. Provide empathetic leadership to cultivate a culture of collaboration, communication, and motivation while upholding RICAN's core values of dignity and respect among staff, volunteers, and clients. Exhibit strong organizational and time-management skills to oversee multiple moving operational parts. Apply financial literacy to manage operational budgets and align thrift shop inventory with current retail trends. Show proven experience in fundraising and resource development (strongly preferred). Maintain a flexible, proactive, and highly collaborative approach to team environment dynamics. Complete and maintain required Food Bank certifications as dictated by operational compliance standards.
Pay:
$62,000.00 - $72,000.00 per year
