Production Operations Manager

Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a results-driven Production Operations Manager to oversee and lead day-to-day operations in our food production facility. This role is responsible for managing production teams, ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards, optimizing operational efficiency, and meeting production targets. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in food manufacturing, team leadership, and continuous improvement practices. Responsibilities Oversee all aspects of food production operations, including planning, staffing, scheduling, equipment, and workflow. Ensure compliance with food safety regulations, quality standards, and company policies. Lead, coach, and develop production supervisors and line staff to ensure high performance and accountability. Monitor production KPIs (yields, throughput, downtime, labor efficiency, waste) and implement corrective actions as needed. Collaborate with departments such as Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Procurement, and Logistics to ensure smooth operations. Analyze production data and identify areas for cost reduction, process improvement, and operational efficiency. Manage staffing levels to meet production demand while controlling labor costs. Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies. Ensure proper maintenance and safe operation of production equipment. Enforce a culture of safety, cleanliness, and food compliance throughout the facility. Additional activities as assigned. Experience Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Engineering, Operations Management, or related field (or equivalent experience). 5+ years of experience in a food production or manufacturing environment, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role. Strong knowledge of food safety regulations, HACCP, GMPs, and related compliance standards. Proven leadership and team development abilities. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills. Proficient in production planning software, ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), and Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies is a plus. Key Competencies 1. Effective at coaching supervisors and line staff to meet goals. 2. Operational Excellence Strong grasp of manufacturing processes, including batching, cooking, packaging, and sanitation. Proficient in using KPIs to track and improve production performance (yield, OEE, waste, etc.). Competency in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies. 3. Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance In-depth knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, FDA/USDA regulations, and third-party audit standards. Able to ensure compliance while maintaining efficient production flow. 4. Planning & Organization Capable of managing production schedules, labor allocation, and resource planning effectively. Strong prioritization skills in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 5. Communication & Collaboration Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels of the organization. Works well with cross-functional teams (QA, Maintenance, Supply Chain, R&D). 6. Problem Solving & Decision-Making Rapidly identifies root causes of operational issues and implements effective solutions. Makes sound, data-driven decisions under pressure. 7. Technical Proficiency Proficient in ERP and production management systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle). Comfortable with Microsoft Excel and production reporting tools. 8. Quality Focus Maintains a strong commitment to producing safe, high-quality food products. Ensures production meets internal and customer standards for consistency and specification. 9. Safety & Risk Management Promotes a culture of safety and enforces all workplace safety procedures. Proactively identifies risks and implements mitigation strategies. 10. Adaptability & Resilience Thrives in a dynamic production environment with changing demands. Maintains composure and performance under stress or operational setbacks.
