WHO WE ARE
The Bolsa Chica Conservancy (BCC), organized in 1990, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Huntington Beach, California. We are dedicated to providing services that inspire and connect all generations through community involvement in science-based education in wetland and coastal ecology. With the support of hundreds of volunteers, the Conservancy works to preserve, protect, and restore the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and surrounding habitats while educating and inspiring visitors in an exciting Interpretive Center that was completely rebuilt with all new exhibits in 2022.
POSITION OVERVIEW
This energetic position is responsible for leading educational and interpretive programs from the Interpretive Center during the eleven-week Summer Curiosity Club (summer camp), June 16 to August 28. This position requires a reliable and independent personality who is passionate about education and interpretive outdoor programs. All hours for this position will occur between June 1, 2026 and August 31, 2026. Additional hours may be available between December 15, 2026 and Jan 5, 2027.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Take a leadership role during the Summer Curiosity Club, working with other staff and interns to guide children ages 6-10 in engaging topics and hands on scientific exploration.
  • Work with the Education Coordinator to plan and lead educational and interpretive outdoor program activities for 11 weeks only during the Summer Curiosity Club (summer camp).
  • Assist with curriculum and activity set-up, clean up, and implementation.
  • Provide before and after care supervision for campers as needed.
  • Lead students on trail and in onsite activities, adhering to the safety and health protocols, and providing direction, care, and supervision of children at all times.
  • Use time management, reporting to work with punctuality and responsibility.
  • Build positive relationships with campers through compassion, empathy, equity,and understanding.
  • Communicate effectively by providing all scientific topics in a fun and engagingmanner.
  • Provide positive feedback to parents and record/report behavior or health/safety incidents to Education Coordinator and senior staff for timely parent notification.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and positive manner that represents an organizational image consistent with BCC's brand.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Education Coordinators, Program Manager or Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
This role embraces servant-leadership as well as a thoughtful approach to day-to-day operational management, strategic planning, and organizational leadership.
  • A high school diploma plus the successful completion of at least one year of college. Pursuit or achievement of college degree in an environmental field or education is preferred.
  • One year of successful experience in a position in outdoor recreation,education/child care, or interpretation programming or a related field.
  • Experience working with children in an outdoor recreation environment, camp, or school program.
  • Outstanding communication skills and organization with children, adults, staff, and volunteers.
  • Reliable to work Tuesday through Friday from June 16th through August 28th.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and strong public speaking ability.
  • Strong work ethic, high energy, and a passion for outdoor program leadership.
  • Adaptable and flexible in daily tasks and willing to work early mornings, evenings.
  • Able to work field based conditions may include trails, wet and muddy terrain, and encountering wildlife, insects, and plant irritants. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, walk, stand, bend, and operate necessary tools.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and clear a background check.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified prior to the start of Summer Curiosity Club - June 16, 2026.
Pay:
Up to $19.00 per hour
