Life Skills Coach Position Type:
Full-time, temporarily hourly until the 12 month AmeriCorps contract begins.
Compensation:
This position will pay $20-$22 per hour temporarily and then will move to an AmeriCorps 12-month full-time contractual stipend. The stipend is $27,200 for a term of service of 12 months plus an additional housing allowance from Ivey Ranch. Upon completion of the term of service, the member will be eligible for a $7,395 education award to pay off existing, eligible student loans or return to school. Ivey Ranch Park is looking for a Life Skills Coach for our Working Intern Program, a program for teens and young adults with special needs and disabilities that focuses on community inclusion, independent living, recreation, and self-advocacy. The individual will provide supervision and direct services to individuals either 1:1 or in small groups of 2-4 participants. The individual will promote both personal and practical skill development through customized learning. Occasionally, the individual will assist in facilitating outdoor community service projects for volunteer groups. The Life Skills Coach will assist participants with special needs: Achieve their individual goals (may be related to social skills, pursuing post-secondary education, seeking volunteer or employment opportunities etc.) Increase their independence. Gain active-learning work experience that provides knowledge and progression. Have an understanding of expectations, routines, and relationships. Have a respect for learning and responsibility. Primary activities and responsibilities will include: Develop/expand the Working Intern Program. Train San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) participants with special needs as volunteers for programs that support children, youth, and families. Serve side-by-side with participants and volunteers, in an outdoor setting, to provide guidance and to improve their retention and success. Assist participants with semester-long college courses as a 1:1 aide.
Skills:
Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Knowledge of basic tools. Computer skills. Good written and communication skills. Ability to create positive relationships with site staff. Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks. Possess leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the team. Ability to problem-solve and approach situations creatively. An interest in and/or a background in: community service and volunteerism, and working with individuals with special needs or at-risk youths. Be willing to do 8+ hours of continuing education per year including attending monthly onsite workshops to advance their skills.
Requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age. Be willing to work indoors and outdoors to best serve the participants. Be eligible to earn 100% of a part-time education award. Be eligible to perform a term of national service. Have unexpired proof of status as a US citizen or possess an unexpired permanent resident status and be able to provide documentation. Be available to serve for a full 12-month period of time, starting no later than February 1, 2027. Be able to complete at least 1700 hours of service within the 12 months of service as well as serve the full term of service. Have reliable transportation to commute between sites where participants are being served and/or to assist with off-site events as needed. Currently hold or obtain certification in First Aid and CPR within 2 months. Complete LiveScan Fingerprinting (including FBI/DOJ). Complete Mandated Reporter, Sexual Harassment, Concussion Protocol trainings. Desired Qualifications Minimum of 6 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination with special needs and experience working with adults in vocational, educational, employment, or volunteer settings.
Availability:
Must be available Monday through Friday, approximately 35 hours per week. Must be available to work a flexible schedule (occasional evening or weekend may be required). _____________________________________________________________________________
