Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego is seeking Teen Program Specialists at our Oceanside Clubhouse. In support of that mission, Teen Program Specialists work directly with an assigned group of students, to provide a safe, responsible, well-supervised afterschool program while acting as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor.
Additional duties include:
driving as needed for the Clubhouse, oversee the Elementary/Middle School age members, and assist with their programs when needed. The Teen Program Specialist's schedule would be Monday- Friday, 2pm- 6pm . Teen Program Specialists must have a genuine interest in the growth, development, and provision of a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for the students they teach. A Teen Program Specialist's ability to establish authority through leadership, communication, and most importantly patience, will be required in giving our students the stability and nurturing atmosphere they need to succeed. The Teen Program Specialist is responsible for planning and implementing lessons that meet Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego County (BGCNWSD) requirements. Teen Program Specialists are responsible for preparing a safe, engaging, and creative learning environment, establishing a positive rapport with members and co-workers, and preparing materials and supplies.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least 21 years old due to supervision requirements of teenagers under the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Membership Requirements. High School Diploma or GED required. At least six months experience working with youth in a classroom, after school, or recreation environment. Ability to speak and write Standard English appropriate in a public-school setting. Being proficient in Spanish is a plus.
- Must pass LiveScan & criminal background checks, and pre-employment drug screening.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Strong Math and English skills (K-12).
- Excellent communication skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management:
Ability to create and implement fun and engaging developmentally-appropriate activities for Teenagers in the areas of common cores, character development, project-based learning, STREAM, fitness and recreation, academics/enrichment. Plans and implements a variety of daily recreational and enrichment activities that align with BGCNWSD monthly themes for groups; continually interfacing with members, volunteers, staff, and parents. Ability to lead and supervise small and large groups by recognizing potential issues and applying established BGCNWSD procedures and problem-solving methods as needed. Ability to observe member behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior management techniques, positive redirection, or appropriate corrective action as necessary to support members in making positive behavior choices. Accurately completes and submits time cards, incident reports, rosters, receipts, and other program related materials in accordance with BGCNWSD policy. Provides updates and feedback on student needs and communicates to site supervisor. Recommend in scheduling guest speakers, clinics, excursions relevant to the program. Evaluates the program daily to suggest improvement, needs, hazards and/or trends to supervisor for further evaluation. Responsible for designated group for duration of program or until replacement Teen Program Specialist arrives - never leave a group unsupervised. Maintains awareness of members' health and wellbeing throughout the program day and promptly reports visible signs of injury or illness. Responsible for immediately reporting and documenting any and all injuries or incidents utilizing established BGCNWSD procedures for notification to the supervisor and parents. Demonstrate reliability and punctuality by arriving on-time for scheduled shift. Attendance and participation at all required staff meetings, trainings, and development activities; select and participate in on BGCNWSD committee annually.
Learning Environment:
1. Lead a group of students (up to 20) in an instructional setting, maintaining high standards for behavior and safety. Ability to develop and implement age-appropriate activities. Serve as a positive adult role model for children in the program through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and courtesy. Create an engaging environment that fosters a sense of belonging for youth. Maintains cleanliness in all program areas; assist with the setup and breakdown during program day to contribute to ongoing maintenance in an effort to keep the school or community site clean and orderly. Maintains student safety by ensuring that members are scanning in and out of the program and maintaining an accurate program roster daily. Maintains accurate member attendance rosters with roll call and continuous group counts - administering mandatory roll calls minimally at every rotation, before and after snack, before, during and after field trips. Ensures age-appropriate conversation among members and staff; promote good manners and encourage common courtesies among members and staff.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Teen Program Specialists are expected to actively work, monitoring BGCNWSD members at all times. Drive Club vehicles when needed, in order to facilitate transportation support for members from their respective schools to the Clubhouse. Oversee, manage, and guide Elementary/Middle School members, when needed. Assist in keeping the site clean, including cleaning tables, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, taking trash out to dumpsters. Ensure bathrooms are clean including toilets, trash, and counters. Provides support for the daily snack/meal program including preparation, serving, clean up and maintaining accurate meal records for daily reporting. Maintain highest degree of confidentiality in staff and member matters. Adherence to all organizational policies and procedures. Ensure appropriate and pre-approved authorizations are maintained in the Administrative Office for ALL forms, activities, and permission slips. Any additional duties related to the afterschool program as assigned by your supervisor or the BGCNWSD Administration.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This position requires a person who can work in a highly interactive setting and an emotionally and physically stimulating environment.
- This position requires a person who can work with many distractions, interruptions and still accomplish their objectives and meet established deadlines. Resource and equipment management are integral components to make the position successful.
- Teen Program Specialists must be able to provide proper supervision of participants.
- Teen Program Specialists must be able to implement activities, while maintaining program safety.
- Teen Program Specialists are expected to adhere to BGCNWSD established dress code at all times.

Relationships:
Internal- Maintains close, daily contact with Club professional staff (professional and volunteer) to interpret and explain organizational mission, program objectives, standards and guidelines. Has regular contact with members. External- With the guidance from the Clubhouse Manager, maintains public relations to increase the visibility of programs, services and activities within the Club and the community. Positively represent BGC Northwest San Diego County through all community interactions.
