Our vision is to end domestic and sexual violence in the lives of all people. For more than 50 years, we have primarily done that within the Monroe, Martin, Owen and Greene Counties. MWH has a multitude of programs and services that are free and confidential. The Youth Program Assistant (YPA) will work to support the Youth Empowerment Services Program (YES) with creating and implementing programs that promote the optimal development of young people ages 5 to 18 and enhance their capacity to achieve success in school, at home, and in the wider community. The YES program exists to intervene in the cycle of violence in the lives of school aged youth in grades K-12 who either reside/formerly resided at MWH's Emergency Shelter and/or The Rise who are facing situations related to homelessness, poverty, and abuse.

The youth program strives to:

(1) provide a safe and nurturing environment, (2) provide academic support (3) provide positive and emotionally supportive role models, (4) provide a health-focused environment, and (5) provide new and enriching experiences.

Qualifications:

• Must commit to a regular weekly/semester/school break schedule
• Must possess a welcoming & positive attitude
• Self-motivated, reliable, and responsive
• Must desire to intervene in the cycle of violence and poverty
• Must desire to make a difference in a child's life
• Provide trauma informed care, guidance, and role modeling to youth and families
• Provide excellent de-escalation and conflict resolution skills with children
• Must be able to work with diverse populations and be nonjudgmental
• Must have patience and a strong work ethic
• Commit to meet or exceed youth program goals
• Utilize and implement excellent problem-solving skills
• Ability to multitask and directly engage with youth and volunteers
• Ability to connect and build rapport with youth and families
• Lead small/large group activities including tutorial duties (reading)
• Receive/follow directions, constructive feedback, and/or criticism from supervisors
• Previous experience working with children is preferred

Responsibilities:

• Assist to open/close the youth programming space during its operating hours
• Assist with school bus arrival procedures for residential youth as needed
• Supervise the children in the afterschool/summer programs at The Rise
• Work/maintain a professional working environment with team member(s) and volunteer(s)
• Assist with maintaining programming stats and/or records as required
• Provide one-on-one and group tutoring
• Contribute with lesson planning and implementation
• Co-facilitate groups with staff/volunteers when needed
• Assist children with social emotional learning and coping skills
• Provide conflict resolution with children using a restorative practices
• Help facilitate community circles with children
• Clean and maintain daily cleaning tasks of the youth program space
• Assist/maintain all snack protocols
• Participate in MWH training as required
• Attend direct staff meetings as assigned
• Other youth-related program duties as needed Programming/Hours
• After School Program (August-May) 3:30pm-8:00pm
• Summer Program (May-August) 12:00pm-6:00pm
• School Breaks (Spring/Thanksgiving/Winter) 12:00pm-6:00pm
• Misc Breaks (MLK Jr Day/President's Day/Election Days) hours vary
