A Program Officer oversees the development of an organization's programs. This may includes staff development, project management, implementation and daily management of activities. May also oversee funds and budgets.
The Youth & Government Coordinator supports the planning, development, and implementation of the YMCA's Youth & Government (Y&G) program, a civics-based leadership initiative for middle and high school students. This role includes mentoring students, organizing meetings and events, serving as a liaison with community partners and school districts, and coordinating logistics for students to attend state conferences. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth development, civic engagement, and education.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Facilitation:
Recruit, train, and support youth participants and volunteers. Work with school districts to find a teacher or volunteer to lead weekly delegation meetings covering program content (legislative, judicial, press, or lobbyist tracks). Lead the program in their absence. Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for diverse youth participants.
Administrative Duties:
Manage participant registration, forms, and fees in accordance with YMCA policies. Track attendance, prepare reports, and maintain communication with parents/guardians.
Event Planning & Coordination:
Prepare students to participate in statewide conference including mock legislature session and pre-conference meetings. Coordinate logistics and travel arrangements for state conferences. Supervise youth participants during off-site events, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct.
Community Engagement:
Build relationships with local schools, teachers, and civic leaders to promote the program. Representing the YMCA and Youth & Government program at public events and meetings.
Qualifications:
Minimum age: 20 years old. High school diploma or equivalent; college degree or coursework in political science, education, public administration, or related field preferred. Experience working with teens in an educational or leadership capacity. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to lead groups, manage events, and oversee logistics independently. Knowledge of state government processes or civic education programs is a plus. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire). Must pass background check and adhere to YMCA child protection policies.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Travel required for program events and state conferences (may include overnight stays). Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and participate in active youth programming.
