The Mattie Rhodes Center provides a holistic approach to individual and family well-being through social services, mental health counseling and the arts. Our staff provides culturally competent programming in the following four areas: Family Services (behavioral health, family violence, substance abuse) Youth Services (in-school intervention, youth development, supportive living) Community Support (health and wellness, community engagement) Cultural Arts (arts education, exhibits and collections)
Responsibilities:
The Community Wellness Specialist will implement different curricula in participating KC metro sites/schools during after school hours. This position will collaborate with several other individuals and organizations inside and outside of MRC to promote and implement health related programs for both youth and adults across the Kansas City Metropolitan area. This includes, but it is not limited to the following programs: Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation's innovative youth development program that uses soccer as a tool to promote social skills and healthy habits Support Groups/Leadership & Apprenticeship - Plan and conduct regular support group sessions for at risk teenagers by implementing Kid-Grit curriculum. Youth Advisory Board - youth choose a community challenge, form solutions and promote system change for their neighborhood. While the Community Wellness Specialist will primarily facilitate health related programming, this position may also provide support at additional youth development, agency, or community based events. This position is a part-time, non-exempt position. The responsibilities of this position require a flexible work schedule and reliable transportation.
ACCOUNTABILITIES PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION & ENGAGEMENT
Implements and supports the innovation of quality programs and services for youth of all ages. Assists the Youth Development Coordinator or site based lead in the delivery of program activities guided by the standards set forth by the Council on Accreditation (COA) and the agency. Responsible for following program structure and contributing ideas to the agency's Youth Development resources, including curriculum development and program design. Addresses safety and behavior concerns with each student or participant as dictated by Mattie Rhodes Center behavior support and management policy. Inspect equipment for -safety hazards, damage or wear to ensure safety of youth, staff and program site; Maintain positive, professional relationships with parents and program partners and engage them in programming.
PROGRAM SUPPORT & PROMOTION
Responsible for providing support in the implementation of other Mattie Rhodes Center youth/family related endeavors, activities, and events. Assist in creation and disbursement of educational/program/event promotional materials. Responsible for collecting registration, tracking attendance, sign-in procedures and implementation of program assessments and keeping this information up to date for reporting. Participate in supervision and team meetings as required. Pursue professional development opportunities as recommended and required by Mattie Rhodes Center. (18hrs of annual training are required of allYouth Development staff)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Passion for youth development, urban education, health and nutrition education, and sports. Ability to physically participate as a player during the activities/games with kids. Experience working with school-age children in out-of-school time or other teaching environments. Experience in a family service agency working with diverse urban populations. Ability to demonstrate patience and compassion in working with youth. Ability to prioritize and think clearly in crisis situations. Flexibility and the ability to work independently and cooperate well in groups. Must possess a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation to program sites, clean driving record.
