Program Overview Our Mission A parent is a child's first and most important teacher. Our mission is to be a trusted resource for parents seeking to give their child the best possible start to school and to life. Our Program 5 Steps to Five is a parenting program, coaching parents and their infants in groups with trained facilitators, who model ways of interacting with the babies and toddlers to build cognitive, verbal, emotional and social skills. Our Goal To prepare these children for school, using the Five Steps - Nurture, Talk, Play, Read, Explore. Parents learn the importance of being the child's first and most important teachers - beginning at birth. Duties and Responsibilities Support the mission, program philosophy and values of 5 Steps to Five. Facilitate positive interaction with others by exhibiting individual maturity, respect, a team-centered approach, flexibility, and an appreciation of culture. Comply with all program policies and procedures. Role of the Teacher Develop caring supportive role-model relationships with parents. Coach parents how to prepare their babies for school. Show ways the child can experience talking, singing, reading and recognizing shapes, colors, sounds, material textures and objects. Pay primary attention to parents, rather than babies. Encourage parents to copy modeled behaviors. Encourage parents to respond/interact with the other parents and facilitator, as well as with their child. Observe parent communication looking for evidence of progress. Position Specific Duties/Responsibilities The Teacher works to provide a safe and constructive experience for an assigned group of parents and their children.

Specifically:

Administer weekday classes as mutually agreed upon (3-4 hours weekly pay will include 1 hour of preparation time including weekday communications) Work alongside a co-teacher during each session Follow curriculum guides/lesson plans, as provided Prepare for sessions by becoming familiar with materials in advance when possible Engage parents in meaningful ways around curriculum/lessons Track and record information on each session, including attendance and participant progress Lead a sing-along with babies and their mothers as part of the music and movement portion of each session Collaborate constructively with coworkers, and communicate regularly with supervisory staff Serve as a positive role model and uphold professional behavior Participate in mandatory meetings, reviews, and training activities Monitor and report weekly participant attendance Provide weekly and annual program feedback Request materials according to established Program timelines Submit receipts to Director as directed Inform appropriate staff concerning family concerns or difficulties as needed Teacher Expectations Attendance is critical. A minimum of 24 hours notice is required for absence or partial attendance at the program, except in the case of illness or emergency, where same-day notice is acceptable. Teachers are entitled to days off which must be scheduled in advance with approval of the Executive Director. Punctuality is expected. Phones are not to be utilized during program hours. Position Qualifications At least three years of professional experience or degree in early childhood education. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a broad range of people Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances Bilingual in Spanish/English Comfortable leading songs and simple movement activities with infants and parents Openness to new ideas and information, including its use in class sessions Position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the duties performed.
