Assistant Project Manager - Retail Construction Field and Office Construction Experience Required Full-Time | Starting at $90,000+ (Depending on Experience) + Benefits Austin/Jones Corp. is seeking an Assistant Project Manager with 3-5 years of commercial construction experience and a strong understanding of both field operations and project management. Retail construction experience is strongly preferred. Experience with big-box retail, grocery, pharmacy, occupied-store remodels, or national retailers such as Target, Walmart, Sam's Club, Target, Costco, or similar clients is highly desirable. This position is ideal for a construction professional with a strong technical foundation who is prepared to develop into a Project Manager role with AJC . Candidates may currently serve as an Assistant Project Manager, Senior Project Engineer, Assistant Superintendent, or another construction professional with meaningful experience in both field operations and office-based project management. This is not an office-only position . The successful candidate must be comfortable visiting and working from active project sites for extended durations when project needs require it. They must be capable of understanding construction methods, interpreting plans, monitoring progress, identifying potential issues, and collaborating with Superintendents and subcontractors. At the same time, this role will provide opportunities to develop expertise in project financials, administration, and client relations. What You'll Do Collaborate with AJC Project Managers and Superintendents from preconstruction through project closeout. Interpret and apply plans, specifications, details, addenda, scopes of work, and field directives. Understand project phasing and sequencing, including how current activities affect upcoming trades and milestones. Support schedule management, look-ahead planning, manpower planning, subcontractor coordination, and field execution. Visit and work from assigned projects regularly, including extended periods when needed, and develop the ability to independently assess progress, quality, safety, schedule performance, and upcoming requirements. Identify potential issues early and assist in developing solutions before they affect schedule, cost, quality, or client satisfaction. Support project budgeting, contract administration, change orders, percent-complete reporting, documentation, and cost control. Participate in client and subcontractor meetings while developing strong client-facing communication skills. Assist with estimating, preconstruction planning, scope review, subcontractor evaluation, and project handoff. Coordinate inspections, testing, compliance requirements, punch-list activities, and project closeout. Assume increasing ownership and accountability for overall project performance over time. Who We're Looking For 3-5 years of commercial construction experience. Demonstrated experience working in both field operations and an office-based project management environment. Retail construction experience strongly preferred. Experience with big-box retail, grocery, pharmacy, or occupied-store remodels is highly desirable. Experience with Walmart, Sam's Club, CVS, ALDI, Target, Costco, or similar national retailers is a significant advantage. Strong ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and construction documents. Solid understanding of construction phasing, sequencing, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, quality control, and site logistics. Ability and willingness to visit and work from active project sites for extended durations as project requirements dictate, while understanding current conditions rather than relying solely on reports from others. Experience with budgets, estimating, change management, RFIs, submittals, contracts, and project documentation. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in fast-paced construction environments where priorities may change quickly. Proactive approach, with the ability to anticipate next steps and take action without waiting for direction.
