Job Description

The University of Montana invites applications for a Director of Strategic Fiscal Planning for the Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics . The position provides strategic financial leadership for the Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics (CBSD) at the University of Montana (UM), overseeing a complex financial environment that includes a Phase III NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) award, a multimillion-dollar portfolio of more than 40 research grants, and nine research core facilities serving UM researchers and external users. The position plays a critical role in ensuring the effective stewardship of CBSD resources and the long-term financial sustainability of its research programs and core facilities. The position serves as a key financial and administrative advisor to the CBSD Director and works across the University to support the Center's research mission and strategic priorities. The role encompasses a broad range of financial, administrative, compliance, and operational responsibilities and requires extensive knowledge of sponsored research administration, University policies, and federal and other sponsor requirements. Provides strategic financial leadership and planning for CBSD, advising the Director on fiscal matters, resource allocation, funding projections, operational efficiencies, and financial sustainability. Oversees the financial administration of the NIH-funded COBRE grant and CBSD's affiliated centers and core facilities, including budget development, projections, expenditure monitoring, reporting, and financial analysis. Oversees grant and sponsored-project financial management, providing guidance to Principal Investigators and staff on proposal budgets, grant expenditures, staffing plans, financial projections, and compliance with sponsor and University requirements. Develops, implements, and evaluates CBSD financial and administrative policies, procedures, and best practices and ensures compliance with University, state, federal, and sponsor requirements. Provides leadership, mentoring, and training to CBSD faculty, Principal Investigators, administrative staff, and affiliated departments on financial management, grant administration, compliance, onboarding, and other administrative processes. Oversees CBSD personnel, payroll, procurement, equipment and asset management, inventory, and related administrative operations, ensuring effective stewardship of Center resources and compliance with applicable requirements. Leads special projects and strategic initiatives on behalf of the CBSD Director and University administration, coordinating stakeholders and resources and ensuring successful implementation and completion. Supervises, mentors, and develops administrative staff, promoting effective operations, professional growth, collaboration, and high-quality service to the CBSD research community. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business management, or a related field and five years of progressively responsible experience in a complex financial environment. Demonstrated leadership skills and sound judgment, including the ability to delegate responsibilities effectively based on staff roles, capabilities, and organizational priorities. Strong knowledge of accounting and financial management principles, with demonstrated experience in strategic financial planning, budget development, forecasting, and financial analysis. Experience with sponsored-project and grant management, including federal and other sponsor requirements. Demonstrated experience managing restricted and unrestricted funds, including revenue generation, procurement, forecasting, resource allocation, and strategic financial management. Knowledge of personnel and payroll administration, including recruitment, compensation, promotions, corrective action, and termination processes. Ability to interpret and apply University, state, federal, and sponsor policies and requirements and ensure compliance with applicable fiscal and administrative regulations. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish effective working relationships with faculty, staff, researchers, administrators, and a diverse range of University offices and academic departments. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and other financial, administrative, and business software applications. Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines. Demonstrated adaptability, sound problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn and apply new systems, policies, and processes. Ability to provide effective guidance, training, mentoring, and constructive feedback while fostering a respectful, collaborative, and professional work environment. Preferred Qualifications Postgraduate training or advanced coursework in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. Experience managing an
NIH COBRE
award, including administrative cores, pilot projects, and scientific core facilities with shared instrumentation. Experience managing University of Montana fund types and financial systems, including Recharge, Program Income, SPABA, Sales & Service, and Gift accounts. Experience administering recharge operations and billing systems for research core facilities and establishing recharge rates in accordance with applicable federal, state, NIH, and University requirements. Extensive experience managing large sponsored-project portfolios within a university academic unit or research center and collaborating with administrative offices such as Business Services, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and Human Resource Services. Extensive experience working with research faculty in the sciences and familiarity with the research environment, including the roles and working relationships of faculty, research staff, and graduate students. Experience working directly with research core facility directors and managers to support financial planning, operations, and sustainability. Experience with financial reporting and compliance for federal grants and restricted and unrestricted funds. Demonstrated experience leading, supervising, and developing a team of administrative staff.
