Job Description

Director of Finance Summit, NJ | Direct Hire | $120,000-$140,000 A well-established nonprofit educational organization in Summit, NJ is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to oversee daily financial operations and support the organization's financial planning and reporting. Key Responsibilities Direct and oversee the organization's day-to-day accounting and financial activities Manage the full tuition billing and collection process, including account reconciliation Monitor cash activity, deposits, and monthly bank account reconciliations Prepare and review journal entries while investigating financial variances Maintain accurate records for donations, endowments, restricted funds, and other financial accounts Assist the CFO/COO with development and management of the annual operating budget Review payroll activity and ensure monthly payroll accounts are properly reconciled Coordinate the annual independent audit, including preparing supporting schedules and communicating with external auditors Work closely with the Advancement team to monitor revenue, expenses, and enrollment-related financial activity Oversee state-funded programs related to nursing, security, technology, and other applicable areas Develop financial reports and materials for board and committee meetings Provide leadership and oversight to accounting staff and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field 5-7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience , ideally within a comparable-sized organization Demonstrated background working in a nonprofit financial environment Prior experience working with external auditors and supporting annual audit processes Strong understanding of fund accounting, restricted funds, and nonprofit financial practices Previous experience leading, supervising, or mentoring accounting staff Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and identify variances Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel Experience with Blackbaud is a plus Experience within an independent school, educational institution, or similar nonprofit organization is highly preferred Benefits Summer hours: 9:00 AM-4:15 PM with Fridays off 10 vacation days + 10 sick days + 4 personal days 6 work-from-home days annually, expected to increase 2 weeks off between Christmas and New Year's Medical, dental, and vision insurance 403(b) retirement plan Short-term disability paid at 100% of salary If you have nonprofit accounting and external audit experience and are looking for an opportunity to lead finance operations within an educational organization, we'd love to hear from you!
