Job Description

Job Summary The Retail Yard Manager runs the day-to-day operations of Little Yukon's retail supply location. This role is the primary face of the business for walk-in customers and contractors, and involves: answering phones and emails, helping customers select the right product, loading material, processing payment, and ensuring the yard is well-stocked, well-organized, and presentable at all times. It is a hands-on role that blends customer service, retail sales, equipment operation, and inventory control. The Retail Yard Manager works closely with the back-office manager on inventory, pricing, and account matters, and reports up to senior management on sales, supply needs, and customer feedback. Success in this role looks like a yard that runs smoothly, customers who come back, and shelves and stockpiles that are never empty when a customer needs them. Job Duties Customer Care Serve as the first point of contact for walk-in customers, phone calls, and email inquiries during yard hours. Greet every customer promptly and professionally and guide them to the right product for their project. Provide knowledgeable recommendations across the full product line: stone, sod, soil, mulch, trees, plants, and related landscape supply. Build lasting relationships with homeowners, contractors, and trade accounts; turn one-time buyers into repeat customers. Address customer concerns calmly and resolve issues on the spot whenever possible; escalate to senior management when warranted. Sales, Cash, and Credit Process retail sales accurately through the point-of-sale system. Handle cash, check, credit card, and account transactions with full accountability for the daily till and end-of-day reconciliation. Prepare quotes, sales orders, and invoices for retail and contractor customers. Apply approved pricing, discounts, and account terms; coordinate with the back office on credit limits and outstanding balances. Track daily and weekly sales activity and contribute to seasonal sales goals set by senior management. Yard Operations and Loading Load bulk material (soil, mulch, stone, sand, etc.) and palletized product into customer vehicles and trailers using a skid steer, loader, forklift, or by hand as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and customer-ready yard; product properly signed, displays neat, walkways clear, and stockpiles well-defined. Perform regular inspections on yard equipment and report maintenance needs promptly. Open and close the yard each day, including securing gates, equipment, and the cash drawer. Follow all safety procedures and ensure customers stay in designated areas while material is being loaded. Inventory Control and Restocking Monitor inventory levels across all product categories and flag low-stock items for reorder before they run out. Coordinate with the back-office manager and senior management on reorder timing, supplier selection, and incoming deliveries. Receive and verify deliveries against packing slips; document discrepancies and damaged product. Perform regular cycle counts and assist with seasonal physical inventories. Identify slow-moving, aging, or distressed product (especially live plants and sod) and coordinate markdowns or removals with senior management. Communication and Coordination Maintain regular, clear communication with the back-office manager on pricing, accounts, deposits, and inventory adjustments. Provide senior management with regular updates on sales activity, customer feedback, supply needs, staffing, and yard conditions. Coordinate with delivery drivers and the design/build side of the business to ensure outbound material moves on schedule. Supervise and direct yard staff and seasonal help during peak season, modeling the customer service standard expected at Little Yukon. Coordinate the growth of the retail sales team and/or yard staff with senior management. Competencies Strong customer service orientation; genuinely enjoys helping people and solving problems. Working knowledge of landscape supply products and how they are used in residential landscape projects (or eagerness and ability to learn quickly). Comfortable handling cash and operating a point-of-sale system with accuracy. Experience operating a skid steer, loader, or forklift, or willingness to be trained and certified. Able to perform physical work in all Minnesota weather conditions, including lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs repeatedly. Organized, detail-oriented, and dependable; shows up early and finishes the day cleanly. Comfortable using email, basic spreadsheets, and inventory or POS software. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to the yard. Working Conditions This is a full-time, seasonal position, where the business operates from March 1st to November 30th each year. There may be opportunities for winter work in other areas of the company. Peak season (April through October) typically runs 45-55 hours per week and includes most Saturdays. Overtime is paid for work in-excess-of 40 hours weekly. The work is primarily outdoors at the retail yard. The role involves frequent walking, lifting, climbing in-and-out of equipment, and standing for long stretches.
