Shipping & Logistics Manager

Job Description

Position Summary We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Shipping & Logistics Manager to lead our outbound shipping operation and manage our relationships with parcel and freight carriers. This position is responsible for ensuring customer orders leave our facility accurately, safely, on time, and at competitive transportation costs . Our shipping mix includes small-package shipments primarily through UPS , as well as LTL and freight shipments through carriers such as XPO Logistics, R+L Carriers, and other regional and national transportation providers . This is a management position with responsibility for employees who perform the day-to-day packaging, preparation, and shipping of our products. The Shipping & Logistics Manager will oversee and organize the work of the department, while remaining fully cross-trained and willing to step into shipping or packaging functions when staffing, volume, or business needs require it. The ideal candidate will combine strong operational leadership with practical shipping experience, carrier management skills, and an understanding of freight costs. Key Responsibilities Manage and oversee all daily outbound shipping activities. Ensure scheduled orders are packaged, documented, staged, and shipped on time. Coordinate parcel shipments through UPS and other small-package carriers. Coordinate LTL and freight shipments through XPO Logistics, R+L Carriers, and other transportation providers. Confirm carrier pickups and address missed pickups, delays, capacity issues, and other shipping exceptions. Review shipment requirements and determine appropriate shipping methods and carriers. Ensure shipping labels, Bills of Lading, packing documents, pallet information, weights, dimensions, and other paperwork are accurate. Supervise, schedule, train, and develop shipping and packaging employees. Establish daily priorities and assign work based on shipment requirements and deadlines. Monitor employee productivity, shipping accuracy, and adherence to procedures. Maintain appropriate staffing and cross-training within the department. Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for parcel and freight carriers. Maintain productive relationships with carrier representatives. Monitor carrier pricing, service levels, reliability, damage rates, and overall performance. Obtain competitive freight pricing and spot quotes when appropriate. Assist with carrier rate negotiations, discounts, minimum charges, and transportation terms. Review parcel and freight charges for accuracy, including dimensional-weight adjustments, reclassification charges, fuel surcharges, and accessorial fees. Identify and dispute incorrect carrier charges or billing discrepancies. Monitor transportation costs and identify opportunities to reduce freight expense without negatively impacting service. Manage freight damage and loss claims through resolution. Coordinate expedited, oversized, high-value, or unusual shipments as needed. Work closely with warehouse, sales, customer service, purchasing, and other departments to resolve shipping issues. Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient shipping area. Working Manager Expectations Although this is a management position, the Shipping & Logistics Manager must be capable of performing the functions carried out by the shipping team when necessary.
This includes:
Packaging products for parcel or freight shipment Building and securing pallets Measuring and weighing shipments Creating UPS and parcel shipping labels Preparing Bills of Lading Scheduling LTL and freight pickups Operating carrier portals and shipping systems Staging shipments for pickup Operating forklifts and other applicable material-handling equipment Assisting the shipping team during periods of high volume or short staffing The primary responsibility of this role is to manage the shipping operation and the people within it , but we expect our managers to understand the work they oversee and support the team when needed. Qualifications Required 3+ years of experience in shipping, logistics, transportation, warehousing, distribution, or a related field. Previous experience supervising or leading employees. Hands-on experience with parcel and/or freight shipping. Familiarity with UPS or similar small-package shipping systems. Experience working with LTL freight carriers. Understanding of Bills of Lading, shipment weights and dimensions, palletized freight, and basic freight documentation. Previous forklift experience and ability to safely operate applicable material-handling equipment; current forklift certification preferred or willingness to complete company-required certification. Comfortable working with carrier websites, shipping software, ERP/WMS systems, and Microsoft Excel. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability and willingness to work on the shipping floor and perform shipping functions when necessary. Preferred Experience managing relationships with
UPS, XPO
Logistics, R+L Carriers, or similar parcel and LTL carriers. Experience negotiating parcel or freight rates. Working knowledge of freight classifications, NMFC concepts, dimensional weight, fuel surcharges, and common transportation accessorial charges. Experience auditing freight bills and resolving billing discrepancies. Experience handling freight damage and loss claims. Experience evaluating and selecting carriers based on rates and service performance. You understand that the job is not only about getting today's shipments out the door. You also pay attention to freight costs, carrier performance, billing accuracy, and transportation options. You are willing to hold both employees and carriers accountable and look for better solutions when they make sense. Most importantly, you understand that the goal is not simply to find the cheapest way to ship. The goal is to consistently deliver the best practical combination of cost, reliability, accuracy, product protection, and customer service . Position Type Full-time, management position. This is an on-site operational role and requires regular presence in the shipping and warehouse environment.
Pay:
$55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
