Job Overview Grace Railroad Contractors is seeking a motivated, experienced, and safety-focused Derailment Services Assistant Manager to support the daily operations of our derailment response and railroad emergency services division. The Assistant Manager will work directly with the Derailment Services Manager to oversee field operations, supervise crews, coordinate equipment and logistics, ensure compliance with railroad industry regulations, and provide leadership during emergency response situations. This position requires strong leadership abilities, railroad operational knowledge, expertise in railcar loading standards, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining a commitment to safety and customer service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist in managing derailment recovery, rerailing, track restoration, and emergency response operations. Supervise and support field personnel to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with railroad and company standards. Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors for derailment and recovery projects. Participate in emergency call-outs and respond to derailments, track incidents, wrecks, and railroad service requests. Conduct job briefings, safety meetings, risk assessments, and post-incident evaluations. Ensure compliance with FRA, OSHA, railroad, and company safety regulations and policies. Monitor project performance, labor utilization, equipment deployment, and operational efficiency. Assist with employee hiring, training, scheduling, mentoring, and performance management. Maintain accurate operational reports, inspection records, equipment documentation, and project files. Communicate effectively with railroad customers, contractors, vendors, and management personnel. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of 3 years of experience in railroad operations, derailment services, construction, heavy equipment, or related industries. Previous leadership, supervisory, or crew management experience. Strong knowledge of railroad operations, track structure, rail equipment, and railroad safety practices. Working knowledge of AAR Open Top Loading Rules Manual and AAR Closed Car Loading Rules Manual . Understanding of railcar load securement, blocking and bracing requirements, weight distribution principles, dimensional loading, and freight transportation regulations. Ability to interpret and apply AAR loading standards to various railcar types and commodities. Experience conducting railcar load inspections and identifying unsafe loading conditions. Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to pass all required pre-employment, random, and post-incident drug and alcohol screenings. Ability to travel extensively and work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency response situations. Preferred Qualifications Experience managing derailment recovery and rerailing operations. Class
A CDL. FRA
Roadway Worker Protection certification or related railroad safety training. Experience operating heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, cranes, side booms, and railroad maintenance equipment. Advanced knowledge of freight loading compliance, transportation safety, and AAR loading standards. Experience working directly with freight customers on load planning, securement, and transportation-related issues. Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and work around heavy machinery. Ability to work extended shifts during emergency response and derailment recovery operations.
Pay:
$30.00 - $35.00 per hour
