Transportation Manager

Job Description

Sutter Metals is seeking an experienced and results-driven Transportation Manager to oversee our transportation, fleet, and dispatch operations. This position will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of materials, containers, and equipment while maintaining compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, and company requirements. We are looking for a hands-on transportation leader who can take full ownership of the transportation department and ensure that our drivers, dispatchers, trucks, tow trucks, and bin fleet operate safely, efficiently, and profitably. The ideal candidate will be organized, decisive, safety-focused, customer-oriented, and comfortable managing people and solving transportation problems in real time. This person should be able to balance daily dispatch demands with long-term transportation planning, while holding the department accountable for safety, productivity, service, and cost control. Key Responsibilities Transportation & Dispatch Operations Oversee all daily transportation and dispatch operations. Manage and coordinate CDL truck dispatch, bin/container dispatch, and tow truck dispatch. Schedule and prioritize customer pickups, deliveries, swaps, and equipment movements. Coordinate transportation needs between yards, customers, drivers, and operations management. Ensure trucks and drivers are scheduled efficiently to maximize productivity and minimize downtime. Monitor daily routes, driver schedules, appointments, and delivery requirements. Resolve scheduling conflicts, delays, breakdowns, missed pickups, and customer transportation issues. Ensure timely communication between dispatchers, drivers, yard personnel, customers, and management. Establish dispatch procedures and hold the transportation team accountable for following them. Monitor dispatcher performance, workload, communication, and customer service. Develop processes to improve route efficiency and reduce unnecessary miles and fuel costs. Bin & Container Dispatch Oversee the scheduling and dispatching of roll-off bins, containers, and other customer equipment. Coordinate bin deliveries, exchanges, pickups, and returns. Maintain accurate records of bin locations and status. Monitor customer requests and ensure timely service. Coordinate bin movements between customers, yards, and processing facilities. Work closely with sales and operations to prioritize container placement and pickup needs. Monitor equipment utilization and identify opportunities to improve fleet efficiency. Ensure customers receive accurate and timely communication regarding scheduled service. Tow Truck Dispatch Oversee tow truck dispatch operations and scheduling. Coordinate vehicle pickups, towing requests, and equipment movements. Prioritize calls based on urgency, customer needs, location, and available equipment. Ensure tow drivers are dispatched efficiently and have the appropriate equipment for each job. Monitor tow truck productivity, response times, and service completion. Coordinate with yards and operations to ensure vehicles and equipment are delivered to the correct location. Resolve customer and driver issues related to towing operations. Maintain accurate records of tow calls, completed jobs, mileage, and equipment movements. Driver Management Recruit, train, onboard, and manage CDL and transportation drivers. Monitor driver performance, attendance, safety, productivity, and customer service. Conduct regular driver meetings and safety communications. Address driver performance issues and corrective actions in coordination with HR and management. Ensure drivers maintain required licenses, certifications, medical cards, and qualifications. Monitor driver schedules and ensure compliance with Hours-of-Service requirements. Coordinate drug and alcohol testing requirements and Clearinghouse compliance with the company's designated
C/TPA. DOT
& Regulatory Compliance Maintain compliance with FMCSA, DOT, and applicable state and federal regulations. Ensure driver qualification files are complete and current. Monitor ELD and Hours-of-Service compliance. Ensure required vehicle inspections and records are maintained. Coordinate DOT drug and alcohol compliance with the company's designated C/TPA. Maintain accurate transportation, drivers, and safety records. Assist with DOT audits, investigations, and compliance reviews. Ensure company transportation policies and procedures are consistently followed. Fleet Management Oversee maintenance and preventative maintenance schedules for trucks, trailers, tow trucks, bins, and other transportation equipment. Coordinate repairs and minimize vehicle downtime. Monitor fleet conditions and make recommendations regarding repairs, replacement, or additional equipment. Track fuel usage, maintenance expenses, mileage, and other fleet-related costs. Maintain accurate records of company transportation equipment. Monitor equipment utilization and recommend changes to improve efficiency. Leadership & Financial Management Lead, manage, and develop the transportation and dispatch team. Establish clear expectations, performance standards, and accountability. Develop and monitor transportation budgets. Identify opportunities to reduce fuel, maintenance, overtime, and transportation costs. Monitor transportation of KPIs and provide regular reporting to senior leadership. Analyze transportation expenses and identify areas for improvement. Develop and implement transportation policies, procedures, and best practices. Work closely with company leadership to develop long-term transportation and fleet strategies. Qualifications 3+ years of experience in transportation, trucking, fleet management, dispatch, or logistics management. Previous experience managing CDL drivers and transportation personnel. Experience with bin/container dispatch and/or tow truck dispatch preferred. Strong knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations. Experience with ELD/HOS requirements. Experience managing dispatch operations, routing, and scheduling. Strong leadership and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong customer service skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and transportation/fleet management software. Experience in scrap metal, recycling, construction, industrial transportation, or waste management is a plus. Preferred Qualifications CDL experience or previous professional truck driving experience. Experience managing a mixed transportation fleet. Experience with roll-off bins or container transportation. Experience with tow trucks or vehicle transportation. Experience coordinating freight, terminals, customers, and outside carriers. Experience managing transportation budgets and KPIs. Experience with DOT audits and compliance programs. Experience working with a DOT drug and alcohol testing consortium/C/TPA.
Compensation Base Salary:
$80,000-$100,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Additional compensation and benefits may include:
