POSITION SUMMARY
The Independent Contractor Fleet Manager is responsible for managing relationships, performance, retention, and operational success of assigned Independent Contractors. This position serves as the primary point of contact for ICs and works to ensure contractors are successful, profitable, and aligned with WEL's service expectations. The Independent Contractor Fleet Manager partners closely with Customer Service, Planning, Safety, Maintenance, Recruiting, and Settlements to support contractor needs while maximizing fleet utilization, service performance, and revenue opportunities. This role is not a dispatch position. The focus is on engagement, business support, communication, revenue planning, safety, and overall contractor success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Serve as the primary relationship manager for assigned Independent Contractors. Build strong working relationships through consistent communication, support, coaching, and problem resolution. Assist Independent Contractors in understanding their business performance, settlement information, operational opportunities, and available resources. Partner with Operations and Planning teams to develop revenue-generating load plans and preplans that support contractor profitability and network efficiency. Monitor fleet performance, utilization, revenue opportunities, service metrics, and operational trends to identify opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with Operations to proactively address service failures, delays, customer concerns, and operational disruptions. Work closely with Safety, Maintenance, Recruiting, and Settlements to resolve contractor issues and ensure a positive contractor experience. Educate and support contractors regarding WEL policies, procedures, programs, and Independent Contractor agreements. Assist contractors with questions related to settlements, deductions, rental programs, maintenance coordination, and operational processes. Promote safety initiatives, regulatory compliance, and company programs to assigned contractors. Monitor contractor retention and engagement, identifying risks and developing action plans to improve contractor satisfaction and longevity. Support onboarding efforts and assist new contractors during their transition into the fleet. Analyze contractor performance metrics and conduct regular business reviews with assigned contractors. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to contractor communications, performance discussions, and action plans. Collaborate with leadership on strategic initiatives designed to improve contractor retention, profitability, and service performance. SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent; required Associate degree (Logistics, Business management, or relatable field); preferred
Experience:
2+ years of supervisor-related experience; required 1+ years in transportation preferred
Computer Skills:
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Windows, preferred Ability to learn and use proprietary software. AS400 experience; a plus
