Job Description

Performs difficult skilled trades work supervising, overseeing and participating in the inspection, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines and appurtenances, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Distribution System Superintendent. Continuous supervision is exercised over Distribution System Specialist. Schedules and directs the work of Distribution System Specialists. Supervises the installation of water taps, fire hydrants, and valves; supervises leak repairs; assists with meter reading when needed. Locates waterlines for contractors and others. Schedules vehicle and equipment maintenance. Serves as Essential Personnel during storms and hurricanes. Performs other assigned duties. Thorough knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of utility service lines. Thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures used in reading meters and recording readings. Thorough knowledge of the hazards of the work and the necessary safety precautions. General knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials used in connecting and servicing utility meters. Ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of subordinates. Skill in the reading of meters and recording of readings. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, and the general public. High school diploma or equivalent. One to three (1-3) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Grade B Water Distribution Operator Certification. Backflow & Cross Connection Certification within two years of hire. NC DOT Flagger training within one year of hire. Valid driver's license.
