GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Caswell County EMS is seeking a dedicated and experienced leader for the role of EMS Shift Supervisor. This position plays a key role in supporting high-quality patient care, guiding field operations, and ensuring crews have the leadership and resources needed to perform at their best. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the supervision of operations on a shift with staff in multiple locations performing advanced life support at the Paramedic level. The employee is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance and operation of advanced lifesaving equipment and providing Paramedic level of life support and medical emergency treatment as needed. Work includes assuring that quality emergency patient care standards are in place, proper equipment and treatment are available and sound judgment and treatment decisions are made. Work includes training and orienting new staff, work assignments, and overseeing proper staffing, inventory of medical supplies and operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, noise, vibrations, hazards associated with emergency medical work. The employee is exposed to human blood and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through conferences, observation, station and incident operations, and public feedback

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises the activities of all the Emergency Medical Services stations on an assigned shift; ensures staff coverage; ensures all equipment is in working order and availability of supplies; ensures the coordination of services with hospital emergency rooms and other agencies; stages various unit for adequate coverage when some units are engaged in transport; re-assigns staff as needed; calls in part-time staff when necessary. Participates in the development of new and the modification of existing policies, procedures and protocols; recommends budgetary needs; troubleshoots and serves as a liaison between management and staff; participates in personnel related functions; participates in providing staff training and ensures that staff are operating within the parameters of their certification; serves as Field Training Officer. Identifies the need and recommends new equipment and supplies needed to provide medical services in concert with medical protocols to citizens. Provides performance coaching, feedback and evaluation for staff; builds a team on the shift and resolves conflicts and tensions. Ensures all equipment, facilities and materials on their shift are maintained in proper working order. Responds to emergency calls and coordinates the provision of medical services making assessments of most critical problems, and decides on treatments to be administered and in what sequence. Responds to complaints, questions, and information providing careful research and investigation. Reviews all records, reports, and other information required by the division and the State. Oversees daily cleaning and inventorying of emergency equipment, supplies, fluids, administration sets and drugs; obtains necessary supplies and medications. Participates in planning and conducting outreach programs such as health fairs, community college career fairs, etc. Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence level in medical technical work and in ambulance service and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of and skill in administering emergency medical procedures and techniques via certification level and maintenance and repair of rescue equipment. Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to emergency medical services. Knowledge of modern and effective principles of supervision including leadership, team building, motivations, communications, performance coaching and evaluation, and collaborative conflict resolution. Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Considerable knowledge of County geography and locations of roads and streets. Considerable knowledge of intravenous therapy and skill in recognizing adverse conditions. Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in emergency care of patients and accident victims. Knowledge of the application of information technology to the work. Some knowledge of County personnel and purchasing policies and procedures. Some knowledge of supervisory laws and regulations. Skill in recognizing patient trauma(s) and signs and symptoms of medical emergencies todetermine appropriate treatment. Skill in collaborative conflict resolution, teamwork and customer service excellence. Ability to use sound judgment in making decisions regarding operations, personnel, and priorities. Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques and medical protocols and standing orders. Ability to interpret, explain, and apply a wide variety of policies, procedures, and regulations. Ability to plan, organize and direct work to meet deadlines and governmental requirements. Ability to supervise all EMS stations on an assigned shift requiring the ability to balance a variety of priorities and requests. Ability to work with a diverse socio-economic population, based on the unique situations encountered. Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner with the public. Ability to work effectively with co-workers, law enforcement personnel, fire personnel, medical personnel, patients and the general public

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from high school and minimum three years' experience in providing paramedic level emergency medical services and serve as field training officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Possession of a valid driver's license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Certification from the State as a Paramedic and considerable experience in EMS service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of a valid driver's license and proof of an emergency vehicle driving class. ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ADA COMPLIANCE

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, and use measurement devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work is performed primarily in an office environment.
• Occasional fieldwork may be required for property inspections.
• Work may involve dealing with difficult or upset individuals.
