Job Description

Lead Fleet Mechanic — Ice Cream Truck Company (Latham, NY) $70-75k / year No nights, no weekends Reduced hours September-March, full salary year-round We run a fleet of 50+ ice cream trucks ranging from 1973 Chevy P-20 step vans to 2022 Ford Transits, plus Sprinters, Workhorse chassis, and a refrigerated trailer. We're looking for one mechanic to lead our shop.
The schedule:
April through August is our busy season — trucks running daily, repairs come in steady September through March is mild — reduced hours, same salary, time for rebuilds, preventive work, and a real off-season No nights, no weekends, no on-call What's in the shop: Your own bay, brand new lift, fully stocked parts inventory Assistant mechanic and manager handle oil changes, tire rotations, and other routine work Major repairs (engine rebuilds, transmission overhauls) are outsourced to specialty shops — you diagnose, decide, and coordinate, but you don't have to pull engines The fleet: 1970s-1990s Chevy P-20s and GMC Workhorse step vans (carbureted, points ignition, old-school mechanical work) 2000s-2020s Ford Transits, Dodge/Mercedes/Freightliner Sprinters, GMC LCF, Nissan NV Mix of gas and diesel, mechanical and fully computerized A refrigerated trailer and transport trailer Who fits this job: A mechanic who genuinely enjoys variety — vintage carburetor work one morning, scan-tool diagnostics on a 2021 Transit that afternoon Someone who came up on older trucks and stayed current with modern diagnostics, or vice versa Independent shop owners looking for a steady paycheck, retired fleet mechanics who want to stay in the game, or experienced dealership techs done with flat-rate Refrigeration/reefer experience is a plus, not required What the work looks like: Daily repair reports come in from 40-50 independent contractor drivers — you triage, prioritize, execute Most work happens in the shop; occasional field runs during shift hours Coordinate with outside shops for major drivetrain work Lead the shop: assistant mechanic and manager report to you on repair priorities
Compensation:
$70,000 base salary, paid year-round Performance bonus plan available [Benefits, PTO, holidays, tool allowance]
