Material Handler Job Description The Material Handler works in a steel distribution center, supporting the shipping and cutting of metal coils for customers. In this role, you learn and perform a wide range of warehouse operations, including cutting, overhead crane operation, skid building, packaging, and machine operation or assisting. You handle steel products from receiving through shipping while maintaining quality, safety, and production goals throughout the shift. Responsibilities Work in a steel distribution center handling metal coils and other steel products from receiving through shipping. Operate an overhead crane to move, position, and stage steel coils and related materials safely and efficiently. Drive a sit-down industrial forklift to load, unload, and transport materials within the warehouse. Utilize saws and cutting mechanisms to cut steel coils and materials according to work orders and customer specifications. Read and interpret work orders to determine cutting dimensions, quantities, packaging requirements, and shipping details. Measure materials accurately using a tape measure to verify dimensions and ensure products meet quality and size requirements. Assist with machine operation and act as a machine helper as needed to support production and processing of steel products. Build skids and prepare materials for shipment, including bundling, packaging, and labeling products correctly. Perform quality checks on finished products, confirming correct sizes, counts, and overall condition before shipment. Use RF scanners and related warehouse technology to track inventory, update order status, and support accurate shipping and receiving. Complete general housekeeping duties to keep the warehouse clean, organized, and safe, including regular cleanup around work areas and equipment. Start each day with production goals in mind and work with the team to meet targets for pieces processed, cut, packaged, quality checked, and bundled. Remain flexible and willing to perform a variety of duties as assigned to support overall warehouse operations and team needs. Follow all safety procedures and guidelines when operating equipment and handling materials in a heavy industrial environment. Essential Skills At least 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing or warehouse environment, preferably in heavy industrial settings. Hands-on material handling experience in a warehouse or steel manufacturing environment. Ability to accurately use a tape measure and perform basic measurements for quality control and cutting operations. Experience operating a sit-down industrial forklift in a warehouse or production setting. Ability to read and interpret work orders and follow detailed instructions for cutting, packaging, and shipping. Strong attention to detail when checking sizes, counts, and overall quality of metal products. Comfort working in a physical, heavy industrial environment and performing manual tasks throughout the shift. Willingness to perform housekeeping duties and maintain a clean and safe work area. Flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and responsibilities as assigned to support warehouse operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience operating an overhead crane in a manufacturing or warehouse environment is a plus. Experience in steel manufacturing or steel distribution is highly beneficial. Experience with RF scanners or similar warehouse technology is an advantage. Skid building or pallet construction experience is helpful. Ability to work effectively toward daily production goals in a fast-paced environment. Openness to learning new equipment and processes as the facility adds new machinery and shifts. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in a steel distribution center with a heavy industrial, physical work environment. You work around steel coils, cutting equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, and other warehouse machinery. The facility is temperature-controlled but can be dirty and physically demanding due to the nature of steel handling and production work. The standard schedule includes a first shift from 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Friday, a second shift from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM Monday through Friday, and a mid-shift from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with flexibility required to train on and work different shifts as needed. You work in standard industrial attire appropriate for a warehouse and steel manufacturing environment, using the necessary personal protective equipment for safety. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin Park, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00/hr.
