Job Description
Summary This TERM position is located in Olympic National Park, in the Maintenance Division. Government housing is not available. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. This job is open to The public U.S. Citizens, Nationals or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL) Federal employees whose job, agency or department was eliminated and are eligible for priority over other applicants. Duties This is a Term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 1 year and 36 weeks remaining in this 4 year term position, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
Work requires regular and continuous surveillance of construction operations in the field. Incumbent is required to perform craftsman work in the investigation of historic structures and in working with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on the rooftops several hundred feet above ground level. The incumbent occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Backcountry work will require the incumbent to hike to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain often up to 15-20 miles a day carrying a heavy backpack.
MAJOR DUTIES
Lead a work crew of 3-7 employees to maintain historic structures in the wilderness of Olympic National Park. Utilize traditional tools to perform sustainable repairs on historic structures while working in remote locations. Perform a wide variety of journeyman level carpentry and trail work. Provides journeyman level technical assistance to carpentry work being performed within the park. Hike 15-20 miles a day and live up to six months of the year in the back country in a small backpack tent. Requirements Conditions of employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.Work Schedule:
This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from full-time to part-time as workload dictates. This position is expected to have up to 1-2 pay periods of part time work (approximately 16 hours/pay period) that is expected to occur sometime in December and/or January. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 20 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.Government Charge Card:

The incumbent performs work at construction sites. This may involve working on scaffolds or working with material that is on supports. There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed under structures, which require him/her to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such tools as handsaws and planers. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. Working Conditions:
Some work is performed inside the confines of NPS Training centers or other Parks, where the incumbent is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The use of some preservative materials may require special knowledge of handling and the use of protective equipment in the shop or at a job site and require special attention and the use of safety equipment. Work is both inside and outside, in all types of weather. The incumbent must work at elevations from sea level to 8,000 feet. Temperatures vary from 20 to 105 degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from 2 to 6 feet with icy driving conditions involved. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in the winter, rain, and extreme heat in summer. A vast majority of the work will be in remote wilderness requiring extended overnight stays in wilderness camps, primarily in small backpack tents, cooking meals over small gas stoves, often in inclement weather.
