Chief Air Operations Technician Salary See Position Description Location 43222 Lowder Aviation Pkwy, New London, NC Job Type Full-Time Job Number 2000305 Department Airport Opening Date 05/13/2026 Closing Date 5/27/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description Benefits Job Description Employees in this class are responsible for making daily decisions on handling communication with pilots, airport safety, fueling, and maintenance when working a shift, especially when they cover the airport alone. Work includes assuring the runway is clear of debris, and the lighting system is working to ensure safe landing conditions; testing fuel deliveries are offloaded to proper tanks and secured; regular testing of fuel tanks; and assisting passengers and pilots with directions, rental car, etc., as requested, and maintaining airport facilities. Work includes operating two-way radio equipment to provide information to pilots. Employees must abide by FAA regulations, OSHA safety rules and regulations, and exercise significant care and accuracy in handling airplane fuel. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards associated with maintenance work, fumes, chemicals, mists, gases, and oils. Starting pay is $39,557 or DOQ. The schedule is seven days on (Tuesday-Monday) and seven days off. Examples of Job Duties Performs maintenance to airport systems; checks runway lights to assure correct position and direction, as well as burning properly; replaces bulbs and adjusts position; checks power source to see if fuses and breakers are working; checks weather observation system. Receives and transfers aircraft fuel from supply tanker; opens and closes lines and turns pump on and off; checks for moisture following standard procedures; pumps from fueling truck as requested or fuels airplanes from fuel truck; keeps fuel truck filled and records all fuel pumped. Ensures that all fuel testing meets the more stringent requirements to comply with the military fueling contract. Troubleshoots operational problems with automated weather system (AWOS), Navigation Aids, etc.; calls the contract system technician and walks through system checks and makes adjustments. Checks fuel farm for leaks; notifies Director of leaks. Maintains security of the airport; locks and unlocks gates; checks hangars and aircraft for vandalism; notifies the Manager and Sheriff of problems. Maintain airport vehicles and generators. Monitor and correct situations where wild animals and birds wander onto airport property. Reads fuel meters; checks for contaminants; downloads pump readings daily showing charged amounts. Operates two way radio; monitors frequency for aircraft landing calls and provides information as requested. Assists customers; provides information on local directions to restaurants, motels, etc., rental and courtesy car, and telephone, etc. Prepares reports and maintains a variety of records. Moves aircraft to appropriate hangars and/or tie down areas. Performs general maintenance in the airport building. Maintains accurate records for landings and take-offs; records aircraft tail number, arrival and departure times, fueled plane or not and whether a touch and go. Operates bush hog, zero turn mower, weed eaters, herbicides, trims trees to maintain the airport grounds. Fills potholes in the asphalt runways and ground erosion immediately adjacent to the runway. Additional Job Duties Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment related to airport systems and the various instruments related to proficient airport operation. Working knowledge of FAA regulations related to duties. Working knowledge of aircraft, types of fuel, and refueling techniques. Working knowledge of equipment, tools, and procedures required in performance of duties. Ability to use sound judgment and initiative in handling crises independently. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and to provide documentation required by FAA regulations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to operate varied equipment required in performance of duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with airport customers, other employees, superiors, and the general public Qualifications High school graduation and related experience with aircraft and aviation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer military experience with aircraft. Special Requirements Possession of a valid NC driver's license. Certificates in fueling and spill prevention preferred.
STANLY COUNTY BENEFITS
(Full-time Employees) Employees accrue sick and vacation time each paycheck. Stanly County observes twelve (12) holidays. New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday), Christmas (3 days). Employees receive one (1) personal day per year.
INSURANCE BENEFITS
: Stanly County provides health & vision insurance with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Our plan is a PPO, 80/20, with a $1000 deductible. Teledoc is offered through our insurance for a $10 co-pay per visit. Primary care visit is a $40 co-payment. Specialist is $50 co-pay. One free eye exam per year. The insurance coverage is FREE to full-time employees. Dental Coverage is with Guardian dental insurance and is FREE to full-time employees.
Other volunteer insurance benefits include:
Flexible Spending Program, Life Insurance, Cancer, Accident, and Disability policies. Stanly County offers an employee health clinic. Our on-site Advance Practice Provider will see employees and dependents covered on our county insurance plan free of charge. This service does not replace your primary healthcare providers but augments their care. As a wellness benefit, employees have the option of joining the Stanly County YMCA. The County will pay half of the employee's membership. Employee Assistant Program is offered through Atrium Health. Each employee will receive up to six (6) free sessions on a rolling year. Dependent children and/or spouse may also use the sessions.
RETIREMENT
: Stanly County Employees will be a member of the N. C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System. Stanly County is required to withhold six percent (6%) from each paycheck and deposit it into the retirement system. The County also contributes to the plan. You are vested at five years as a contributing member. After one year of contributing membership in the system, a death benefit is available if you die while still in active service or within 180 days of your last day of service. NC 401(k) (Supplemental Retirement Plan): Employees can contribute to the Empower 401(k) plan upon hire. If the employee contributes at least one percent (1%), Stanly County will match one percent (1%). Additionally, employees may make additional contributions through the following options: 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and Roth Plan Option.
LONGEVITY
Longevity pay is earned after three (3) years of continuous Local Government retirement benefited service working with Stanly County government.
