DESCRIPTION:

The City of Peru is seeking a motivated and dependable person to join our team as a City Maintenance Worker. This position is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of city utilities as well as snow removal for our streets and lawn maintenance for city properties. Supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(with or without reasonable accommodation) Maintains and repairs critical city infrastructure including city streets, water distribution system, sewer system, city buildings and other property, and all city equipment. Performs snow removal duties, especially during snow emergencies. Mowing and general lawn maintenance of city-owned properties including city parks. Reads utility meters monthly and performs any required maintenance. Operates city-owned vehicles, tools, and heavy machinery. Performs on-call duties as assigned by supervisor. Follows all established safety procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be authorized to live and work in the United States. No sponsorship available. Must be at least 19 years of age at the time of hire. A High School Diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid United States Driver's License and must be able to be insured by the city to drive government vehicles. Must be able to speak, read, and write in English. Must submit to a background check and be able to pass a drug screening. Must have a mobile phone and an email address. Willing to obtain any licensing required by the city. Must be able to safely and legally learn and operate city vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment. Must be able to maintain regular and dependable attendance on the job, including attendance and job performance for possibly prolonged periods of time when called out on short notice due to weather conditions, emergencies and similar situations of public necessity. Must be able to follow legal orders and directives. Must abide by established safety standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in public works, construction, or a related maintenance field. Plumbing experience is highly preferred. Possession of a Water Operator's license or a Wastewater Operator's License is highly preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is generally performed outdoors and requires a considerable amount of physical activity including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. The applicant must have reliable transportation. Duties require the ability to tolerate an indoor and outdoor work environment which includes contact with dirt, dust, chemicals, pesticides, noise and inclement weather conditions. Must wear appropriate work attire and PPE as required. An applicant must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and the ability to operate hand and power tools. Work hours may include on call evenings and weekends.
