Job Title:
PLC Migration Engineer Job Description This role focuses on modernizing legacy Allen-Bradley SLC 500 systems to CompactLogix platforms within manufacturing plants. You will migrate PLC logic machine-by-machine on the plant floor, using Rockwell conversion tools where possible and manually rewriting code when necessary. You will also support startup, testing, and troubleshooting activities to ensure each machine operates reliably and safely after migration. Responsibilities Migrate PLC logic from Allen-Bradley SLC 500 systems to CompactLogix on a machine-by-machine basis within manufacturing environments. Use Rockwell conversion tools to streamline migration efforts and manually rewrite PLC code when automated conversion is not sufficient. Program, write, modify, and troubleshoot PLC code to ensure each machine functions correctly upon completion of the migration. Support startup, commissioning, and testing of machines after migration to verify full functionality and performance. Diagnose and resolve control system issues, including I/O, communication, and logic faults, during and after migration. Work with automation hardware such as servos, VFDs, motors, and vision systems to ensure proper integration with the new PLC platform. Configure and adjust HMI interfaces as needed to align with the updated PLC logic and system architecture. Collaborate with plant personnel on the manufacturing floor to plan migrations, minimize downtime, and coordinate testing and sign-off. Document changes to PLC programs and control systems to support future maintenance and continuous improvement. Travel to customer sites across Michigan to perform onsite PLC migration, commissioning, and troubleshooting work. Essential Skills Hands-on PLC migration experience, specifically converting legacy systems to newer Allen-Bradley platforms. Strong experience with Allen-Bradley SLC 500 PLCs. Strong experience with Allen-Bradley CompactLogix PLCs. Proficiency in PLC programming, including the ability to program, write, modify, and troubleshoot ladder logic and related code. Experience using Rockwell Automation tools for PLC programming, conversion, and troubleshooting. Proven troubleshooting skills in automation environments, including diagnosing and resolving control system issues. Commissioning and startup experience for automated equipment in manufacturing plants. Ability to ensure machines are fully functional and operating correctly upon completion of PLC migration. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs. Prior PLC migration project experience in manufacturing plants. Experience working with HMI systems and updating HMI screens to match new PLC logic. Familiarity with automation systems involving servos, VFDs, motors, and vision systems. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently at customer sites. Comfort working directly on the plant floor and interacting with operations and maintenance personnel. Work Environment This role is field-based and requires regular onsite work at customer manufacturing plants across the state of Michigan. You will typically work Monday through Friday, averaging 40 hours per week. You will drive to customer sites to perform PLC migration, commissioning, and troubleshooting work, then drive home at the end of the day when feasible. For sites that are too far for daily commuting, you will stay in a hotel during the workweek and return home on weekends. Travel-related expenses, including mileage reimbursement, per diem, and hotel accommodations, are covered. Projects vary in size from small engagements involving a few machines to multi-month deployments across entire plants, providing exposure to a wide range of equipment, automation technologies, and control systems in active manufacturing environments.
