The job in one line You'll be the person a customer calls when he needs metal today — and you'll work out what he actually needs, price it, and make sure it gets to him right. What you'll actually do Most of our business comes in over the phone from trade customers: fabricators, machine shops, contractors, landscapers, maintenance crews. Your day is built around them. Take calls, emails, and walk-ins, and work out what material and service the job needs Quote it, enter the order, and follow it through until the customer has it in hand Chase your own quotes and follow up on deliveries — nothing gets left hanging Keep customer and order information accurate in our system Take payment at the counter Spot the opportunity when a customer's job needs more than they asked for You'll be on your feet, moving between the counter, the office, and the shop floor, checking that what's on the ticket is what's on the saw. About the environment This is a metal shop. It's noisy, there's oil and steel dust, and you will not stay clean. The people who do well here don't mind that and will roll their sleeves up when the day calls for it. If that's a dealbreaker, this isn't the right job. The math This is where most people come unstuck, so we'll be straight about it. You need to be comfortable with fractions and measurement without reaching for your phone. If a customer wants 14 pieces at 8 3/4" long, you should be able to tell him what that adds up to and whether it comes out of a 20-foot length. You'll read a tape measure and a caliper every day, and you should know your times tables cold. There's no calculus here. It's shop math, done quickly and accurately while somebody's waiting on the line. Driving Depending on your experience and how things develop, we may ask you to make local deliveries as part of the role. That's why a valid, clean driver's licence is required. You don't need commercial driving experience and you don't need a CDL — but you do need a licence we can put on our insurance. A good number of our customers speak Spanish, and being able to serve them in their own language makes a difference here Basic computer skills — you'll be entering orders and emailing quotes all day Willingness to work in a shop environment: on your feet, dirty, some lifting What we'll teach you Everything about metal. Grades, shapes, tolerances, and what a customer means when he asks for something by the wrong name. How to run our equipment. Our order system. No metals background required — we've trained people from scratch and they've done very well. Experience that helps (but isn't required) Auto parts counter, hardware, plumbing or electrical supply, building materials, machine shop — any job where you served trade customers and had to know the product.
