Togo North America (TNA) is seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and analytical Tariff & Import Specialist to manage tariff-related costs associated with imported products and oversee the complete customer tariff recovery process. This position will be responsible for tracking tariff expenses, maintaining supporting documentation, communicating tariff charges to customers, invoicing, monitoring outstanding balances, following through on collections, and staying current on tariff changes affecting TNA's imported products. The position will work closely with Accounting, Sales, Purchasing, Logistics, Customer Service, and management to ensure tariff costs are accurately identified, billed, collected, and reported. About Togo North America Founded in 1940 in Coldwater, Michigan, our company built a reputation for quality, reliability, and customer commitment. In 2023, production operations transitioned to Togo North America in Portland, Tennessee. TNA is a Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive supplier providing hose clamps, flat springs, and clutch packs through a combination of in-house manufacturing and strategic imports from Japan. The Opportunity The Tariff & Import Specialist will take ownership of TNA's tariff tracking and customer recovery process from initial tariff assessment through final collection.
Key responsibilities include:
Track tariff costs associated with imported products, materials, components, and international shipments. Maintain accurate records of tariffs paid and tariff-related costs by shipment, product, part number, customer, and other applicable categories. Review import and customs documentation to identify applicable tariff and duty costs. Calculate, document, and reconcile tariff amounts to be recovered from customers. Prepare tariff-related customer invoices, debit memos, supporting documentation, and reconciliations. Communicate professionally with customers regarding tariff charges, calculations, invoices, payment status, and outstanding balances. Track tariff invoices and customer payments from initial billing through final collection. Proactively follow up on outstanding tariff receivables and escalate aging or disputed balances as appropriate. Maintain documentation of customer agreements, approvals, disputes, payment commitments, and collection activity. Reconcile tariff amounts paid by TNA against amounts billed and collected from customers. Identify unrecovered tariff costs and communicate financial exposure to management. Maintain dashboards, spreadsheets, reports, or other tracking tools showing tariff costs, amounts billed, collections, outstanding balances, aging, and recovery percentages. Monitor changes to applicable U.S. tariffs affecting TNA's imported products and materials. Research tariff updates and communicate potential financial and customer impacts to appropriate leadership and departments. Coordinate with customs brokers, freight forwarders, logistics providers, and other external partners as necessary. Coordinate internally with Purchasing, Accounting, Sales, Customer Service, Logistics, and management to ensure accurate tariff information and timely recovery. Work with Sales and management when customer negotiations, pricing arrangements, or agreements affect tariff recovery. Assist Accounting with accounts receivable follow-up and related financial activities as needed. Develop, document, and maintain written procedures, tracking systems, and standard work for the tariff management and recovery process. Identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, documentation, controls, and accountability throughout the process. Maintain organized supporting records for customer inquiries, internal review, audits, and financial reconciliation. Perform other accounting, administrative, and business-support responsibilities as assigned. What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who is extremely organized, detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable taking ownership of a process from beginning to end.
The ideal candidate will have:
Associate or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Supply Chain, Logistics, International Business, or a related field preferred. Previous experience working with tariffs, customs, international shipments, import/export processes, or customs brokerage is highly preferred. Experience working for or with a customs broker, freight forwarder, international logistics provider, or manufacturing company that regularly imports products would be ideal. Familiarity with tariff classifications, duties, customs documentation, international shipping documentation, and landed-cost calculations strongly preferred. Experience in accounting, accounts receivable, customer account management, purchasing, logistics, import/export, or manufacturing preferred. Automotive or manufacturing experience is a plus. Strong Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to organize, analyze, and reconcile detailed financial and shipment data. Experience with ERP systems; Plex experience preferred. Strong mathematical and analytical skills with the ability to reconcile tariff costs, invoices, collections, and discrepancies. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to professionally communicate with customers regarding tariff charges, invoices, supporting documentation, payments, and disputes. Ability to independently research and monitor changing tariff requirements and understand their potential impact on imported products and company costs. Strong follow-through and willingness to proactively pursue outstanding invoices, customer responses, disputes, and other open items through resolution. Ability to manage multiple customers, shipments, invoices, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously. High level of accuracy, organization, confidentiality, accountability, and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively across Accounting, Sales, Purchasing, Logistics, Customer Service, and management.
