Job Description
- Paginate pages across the daily, biweekly, and weekly publications using Adobe InDesign, meeting each publication's distinct deadline schedule.
- Lay out and format obituary pages, ensuring accuracy, consistent styling, and proper placement of photos and family-submitted text.
- Coordinate with the print production team to ensure pages are proofed, corrected, and sent to press on time. Editing
- Edit incoming press releases, community submissions, and reader-contributed content for grammar, clarity, AP style, and factual consistency.
- Edit and format obituaries submitted by funeral homes and families, verifying details and adhering to house style and pricing/word-count policies.
- Review copy for libel concerns, accuracy, and adherence to journalistic standards prior to publication. Calendars & Community Content
- Compile, edit, and maintain community calendars of events for print and web, gathering submissions from local organizations, businesses, and readers.
- Coordinate calendar deadlines across all three publications and the website to ensure timely, accurate listings. Coverage & Photography
- Provide reporting coverage for local news, community events, and features as assigned, particularly when staffing needs require additional support.
- Take photographs at assigned events, meetings, and features for use in print and online publications.
- Write cutlines/captions and headlines for photo and story content. Digital & Web
- Publish and format content to the news website using Blox CMS, ensuring consistency between print and digital versions of stories.
- Support social media or web updates as needed to promote content across platforms. Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Prior experience in a newsroom, copy desk, or publication production environment preferred.
- Proficiency with Adobe InDesign is required.
- Experience with Blox CMS strongly preferred.
- Strong command of grammar, AP style, and editing best practices.
- Basic photography skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines across different publication cycles. Work Environment
- This position requires working across multiple deadline cycles in the same week (daily, biweekly, and weekly production schedules).
- Some evening or weekend work may be required to cover community events.
- Local travel within the Central New York coverage area is required for assignments and photography.
