Job Description

CUTTER/DRAPER
Overhire Seasonal, hourly $22 - 24/hr., depending on experience A Noise Within (ANW) in Pasadena performs and produces classical theatre as an essential means for our community to confront the universal human experience, expand personal awareness, and challenge individual perspectives. We seek an experienced Cutter-Draper to join our ambitious and growing organization. The professional Equity company produces 6 mainstage productions including A Christmas Carol each season.
Overview:
Cutter/Draper Overhire will utilize their skills in pattern drafting and cutting, to draft a mock-up, then ensure the construction of the final designs of costumes alongside Costume Shop Manager. After the pieces have been patterned and cut, the Cutter/Draper will explains the order of construction to the stitchers overhire for assembly. The cutter/draper does the actual fitting on the actor alongside the CSM and will make any necessary corrections to the patterns. Cutter/Draper Overhire reports to the Costume Shop Manager and Costume Designer.
Responsibilities:
  • Confirm costume builds with CSM and Designer for individual production
  • Draft patterns and plan construction of garments based on Designer's renderings
  • Cut pattern out for mock-up and assist CSM with first fitting
  • Create work list & instruct Stitchers on the building/assembling of garment pieces; help track costume progress
  • Oversee construction of final costumes alongside CSM
  • Assist CSM with alteration for costumes ahead of First Dress Rehearsal.
  • Attend fittings and prepare corrections and alterations to costumes with CSM as needed.
  • Meet deadlines set by CSM and Costume Designer.
Experience:
  • 5 years experience as a draper and sewing costumes in professional theatre, or in garment construction.
  • Proficient in machine sewing and hand sewing/finishing skills.
  • Experience in machinery (industrial & domestic), familiarity with sergers and ironing equipment.
  • Working knowledge in the theatrical industry.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of garment construction methods, alterations, tailoring, pattern drafting, and draping.
  • Self-motivated team player who can handle fast timelines; and is detail oriented.
  • Ability to generate patterns or mockup templates to be handed off to First Hand or Stitcher Overhire to build final garments.
  • Experience in preparing, laying out and notating pattern matching to handoff materials to CSM or Stitcher Overhire.
  • Knowledge of costume construction methods, alterations, patterning/draping, and costume history.
