Every project we build is custom. We work with museums, artists, architects, designers, and public agencies to create one-of-a-kind installations that demand exceptional craftsmanship, precision, and teamwork. We're looking for a Technical Designer who understands how things are built and can produce clear, accurate shop drawings that allow our fabrication team to build efficiently and correctly. Museum experience is not required. If you've created shop drawings for custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, commercial interiors, store fixtures, custom metal fabrication, or similar projects, we'll teach you the museum and exhibit industry. Position Summary This is not a conceptual design position. We are not looking for a graphic designer, exhibit planner, or industrial designer. We're looking for someone with 3-7 years of experience producing construction documents and shop drawings for custom fabricated projects. Your primary responsibility will be translating approved designs into accurate, fabrication-ready drawing packages that can be built by our cabinetmakers, metal fabricators, CNC operators, finish carpenters, and installers. If you enjoy solving construction problems, organizing technical information, and creating drawings that builders trust, we'd like to hear from you. What You'll Do Produce detailed shop drawings for custom fabrication projects. Create complete construction document packages from design through fabrication.
Develop:
Site plans Floor plans Elevations Sections Assembly drawings Exploded views Material specifications Hardware details Installation details Coordinate drawings with architectural, engineering, and fabrication requirements. Work closely with project managers, engineers, and fabrication teams. Resolve construction issues before production begins. Revise drawings throughout fabrication as projects evolve. Deliver drawing packages that keep production moving on schedule. What We're Looking For You should have experience creating shop drawings that have actually been used to fabricate custom work. You understand that good drawings reduce mistakes, save time, and make life easier for the people building the project.
You naturally think through:
How parts fit together Construction sequencing Material selection Hardware requirements Tolerances Installation methods You know when additional detail is necessary—and when simplicity is better. Required Qualifications 2-5 years producing professional shop drawings or construction documents. Experience detailing projects that were fabricated and installed. Strong AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or Solidworks experience Experience with Rhino is a plus. Ability to read and understand architectural drawings. Strong understanding of construction methods and fabrication processes. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Preferred Experience Experience with one or more of the following: Custom cabinetry Architectural millwork Commercial interiors Store fixtures Museum exhibits Scenic fabrication Theme park construction Architectural metal fabrication Custom fabrication Why Join Gizmo? At Gizmo, you'll work on projects unlike anything found in a typical cabinet shop or architectural office. Our work becomes permanent installations in museums, universities, civic buildings, parks, and public spaces across the country. You'll collaborate directly with experienced project managers, engineers, fabricators, and installers, and you'll see your drawings become finished projects that people experience for years to come. We believe the best technical designers are builders at heart. If that describes you, we'd like to meet you. Compensation & Benefits $58,000.00 - $76,000.00 per year 100% employer-paid health insurance Retirement contribution Paid vacation and holidays Unique, award-winning museum and public art projects Clear path to Lead Designer role as the employee demonstrates speed, accuracy, and project ownership.
