This role is well suited to someone who understands that successful residential design must be both beautiful and buildable. You will work directly with homeowners, builders, general contractors, installers, and the Surface Theory team to develop functional design solutions, communicate design intent, and guide material and finish selections. The position also includes working with clients in our showrooms. Showroom consultations are an extension of the design process: helping clients understand materials, compare options, coordinate finishes, and make confident decisions that support the overall project. Responsibilities Develop functional layouts and design concepts for kitchens, bathrooms, and whole-home remodels. Prepare and communicate floor plans, elevations, cabinetry concepts, and other drawings appropriate to the project. Translate client goals, lifestyle needs, and aesthetic preferences into practical design solutions. Collaborate with builders, general contractors, installers, and other project participants to address feasibility and clarify design intent. Guide clients through material, product, color, and finish selections in the showroom. Create organized selection schedules, specifications, presentations, and supporting project documentation. Consider budget parameters, product availability, and lead times when recommending solutions. Present options clearly and help clients understand the functional, aesthetic, budget, and construction implications of their decisions. Maintain accurate records of revisions, selections, and client approvals across multiple active projects. Review project information carefully and identify questions or coordination issues before they create confusion in the field. Essential qualifications Practical experience in residential design, building design, remodeling, kitchen and bath design, or a closely related field. Experience working directly with homeowners and with builders, general contractors, installers, or construction teams. Strong ability to develop functional layouts and communicate ideas through drawings and presentations. Working knowledge of residential materials, finishes, cabinetry, fixtures, and product coordination. A strong portfolio demonstrating relevant residential work and sound design judgment. Clear written and verbal communication, strong organization, and careful attention to detail. Ability to explain alternatives and tradeoffs without overwhelming the client. Comfort working in a showroom and assisting clients with selections as part of the broader design process. Preferred skills Experience with CAD, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Chief Architect, or comparable design software; proficiency in every program is not required. Rendering or 3D visualization experience. Familiarity with selection schedules, product specifications, and construction documentation. Awareness of residential construction sequencing, product lead times, and budget considerations. Kitchen or bathroom cabinetry design experience. Schedule and compensation Full-time employment is preferred. Part-time hours may be considered for a strong candidate. This is an in-person position involving showroom work and direct collaboration with clients and project teams.
