In this vital role, you will facilitate clear and effective communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and English-speaking audiences across various settings. Your expertise in interpretation, cultural competency, and professionalism will ensure that all parties experience seamless, respectful, and accurate exchanges. Responsibilities Provide accurate interpretation of spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa in real-time across multiple settings, including educational, medical, legal, and community environments. Conduct interpretation using various techniques such as simultaneous interpretation (interpreting in real-time), consecutive interpretation (interpreting after the speaker pauses), and over-the-phone interpretation when required. Demonstrate strong cultural competency to understand and respect the cultural nuances of Deaf communities while maintaining professional ethics at all times. Collaborate with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders to ensure clarity of communication and address specific language needs or preferences. Maintain confidentiality of all interpreted information in accordance with ethical standards and organizational policies. Utilize linguistic skills to translate documents or materials from English to ASL or other relevant languages as needed. Stay current with best practices in interpretation, including advances in linguistics, interpretation techniques, and relevant legal or educational standards. Experience Proven experience as an American Sign Language Interpreter in diverse settings such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal proceedings, or community organizations. Demonstrated proficiency in interpretation techniques including simultaneous, consecutive, over-the-phone, and educational interpretation. Multilingual abilities are a strong plus; familiarity with additional foreign languages enhances communication versatility. Strong understanding of professional ethics related to confidentiality, impartiality, and cultural sensitivity when working with Deaf communities. Excellent communication skills coupled with a solid foundation in linguistics and translation principles. Knowledge of the unique communication needs of bilingual or multilingual individuals and the ability to adapt accordingly. Familiarity with the use of interpretation technology tools and platforms for remote or virtual interpreting sessions.
