THE POSITION

Performs a variety of sign translating assignments for a certificated hearing impaired teacher; assists with the preparation of classroom and teaching materials; performs routine clerical duties; and does other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The American Sign Language Interpreter primarily assists with communication between the credentialed hearing impaired teacher and students, parents and staff through the use of American Sign Language (ASL)/Signed English. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively, but no one position will necessarily include all of these duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: Interpreting for the teacher at staff/office meetings using American Sign Language. Interpreting announcements that are made into the classroom via the intercom for the teacher. Attending meetings with parents, including Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, for the purpose of interpreting for the teacher. Interpreting student classroom conversations for the teacher. Monitors the classroom to motivate and encourage students to stay on task. Circulates the classroom during tests and quizzes to prevent students from talking. Assists students with projects and classwork. Prepares instructional materials as directed by the teacher. Types, files, and duplicates materials as directed. Operates office and instructional equipment as assigned. Assists teacher with taking attendance in the classroom and simple grading. Accompanies teacher to assemblies and school events; answers telephone calls and alerts the teacher to bells and alarms. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Knowledge of:

Reading, writing and mathematics exceeding the 12 th grade level. American Sign Language. Correct English usage and appropriate vocabulary. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Classroom procedures and appropriate behavior.

Ability to:

Read, write and speak English proficiently. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Communicate with hearing impaired individuals using American Sign Language. Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment. Work cooperatively and effectively with the teacher and follow his/her directions. Work cooperatively with co-workers, school staff, parents and others. Motivate, gain the cooperation of, and relate well to students as an adult role model Be organized and manage time effectively. Maintain records and confidentiality. Be reliable in attendance, punctuality, and follow-through. Perform routine clerical duties and learn to operate instructional and office equipment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade; one year of experience providing interpreting/translating for hearing impaired individuals, preferably working in a school setting is desirable; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities to assist a hearing impaired teacher in an educational environment. Incumbents are encouraged to participate in on-going educational opportunities through courses, seminars and workshops in the area of signed interpretation, instructional services, psychology, and/or guidance.

REQUIREMENTS

Fluency in American Sign Language/Signed English and the ability to interpret/translate at a typical conversation rate in sign Pass the District's Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score Must maintain a valid California Driver's License
