Job Description
Gaston County Public Health is committed to protecting, promoting and preserving the health and well-being of all Gaston County residents. An hourly salary range of $18.56 -$21.57 is anticipated for this position. The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform. Assist clinic staff nurse, doctors, clinicians and clerical staff with interpreting/translating registration information, health histories, present medical problems, personal data and interpreting/translating instructions and health education information to non-English speaking clients. Performs other duties as assigned. Checks the call line for messages from Haitian clients to get information regarding their needs, scheduling the appointment and/or assisting them in getting answers to any questions or concerns they may have. Schedule appointments for clients with other necessary providers and return visits for non-English speaking clients. Make home visits with medical and/or social work staff when needed to translate for Haitian Creole speaking clients when home visit intervention is needed. Provides written translation of forms, pamphlets, or other written materials when needed. As needed, assist in preparedness and emergency response activities in situations that threaten the public's health (i.e. disease outbreaks, natural disasters, etc.). Performs miscellaneous clerical duties as needed on a daily basis. Carryout Performance Management (PM) roles and responsibilities, including identifying and communicating performance improvement opportunities and adjusting performance and practice to achieve established PM goals. Implement strategies aimed at achieving Health Equity, including but not limited to attending trainings to better understand inequities, identifying and addressing barriers to health, serving on the Health Equity Team or its subcommittees, engaging in internal or external efforts to eliminate health disparities. A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED certificate is required. Candidate must be fluent in Haitian Creole The selected candidate will be required to complete a Language Proficiency Test, which will be administered at the time of hire. Valid license to operate a motor vehicle. Special knowledge, abilities, skills physical requirements and other factors: Knowledge of medical terminology in both English and Haitian Creole is essential. Knowledge and acceptance of diverse cultures is required. After hire, the interpreter is required to take a medical terminology test within 6 months. If the test is not passed on the first attempt, the interpreter must retake and successfully pass the test before the end of the 9-month probationary period to maintain employment This position may be required to work at any of the three locations and on the mobile units as needed. The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
