Job Description

Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered. This contract opportunity seeks an Educational Sign Language Interpreter to support students in a school setting located in Portales, NM. The role involves providing interpretation services primarily on a one-to-one basis with a preschool student and offering sign language exposure to students from 1st through 8th grades. This position runs ASAP through May 21, 2026, for approximately 32 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Responsibilities:
Provide clear and accurate American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for a preschool student on a 1:1 basis. Facilitate sign language exposure and communication for students in 1st through 8th grades. Collaborate with educators and support staff to ensure effective communication access. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards in educational interpreting.
Qualifications:
Current State/Discipline license: SLI Licensed in New Mexico is required. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) with demonstrated interpreting skills in educational settings. Strong understanding of language development appropriate for preschool through middle school students. Ability to work respectfully and effectively with students and school personnel.
