This position plays a critical role in ensuring clear, accurate communication between healthcare providers and Deaf or Hard of Hearing patients during routine and specialized medical visits.
Place of Performance:
Salem, OR (On-site at Chemawa Indian Health Center)
Position Type:
PRN / Per-Appointment / Flexible Hourly Duties Provide accurate, impartial, and fluent in-person ASL interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients during scheduled clinical appointments. Interpret complex medical terminology, clinical discussions, treatment options, and provider instructions accurately. Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA guidelines, patient privacy standards, and facility conduct rules. Log and confirm accepted assignment schedules with advance notice (typically 72+ hours prior to appointments). Provide contingency Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) coverage on occasion when in-person attendance is not feasible.
Work Schedule Hours:
PRN / On-demand during clinic operating hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday:
8:00 AM - 5:00
PM Wednesday:
12:30 PM - 5:00
PM Qualifications & Requirements Certification:
Current Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Interpreter Certification (NIC), or equivalent recognized national certification.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of professional ASL interpreting experience in medical, clinical, or healthcare settings.
Fluency:
Native or near-native fluency in both American Sign Language and English.
Compliance:
Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations, PHI protection, and medical ethics.
Reliability:
Dependable transportation to 3750 Chemawa Road NE, Salem, OR. Must pass background check requirements.
Pay:
$48.15 - $50.17 per hour

Bachelor's (Preferred)
