Reporting to the President & General Manager, the Station Manager directs programming, day to day radio operations, and volunteer coordination for WDSE FM / The North 103.3 while actively driving cross platform integration with PBS North television and digital channels. This role serves as the programmatic and operational manager of the radio station, collaborating cross departmental to execute revenue strategies, on air pledge drives, budget targets, and multimedia initiatives. The Station Manager ensures operational excellence, strict FCC compliance, high-quality local sound, and measurable audience growth across broadcast, streaming, and digital platforms. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cross Platform Collaboration and Revenue Strategy Collaborate cross departmental with PBS North television production and digital media teams to cross promote local initiatives, aligning multi-platform storytelling, and extend radio content into video, digital and online formats. Partner with Development and Membership leadership to plan, script, produce, and execute annual on-air pledge campaigns, membership drives, and donor engagement events. Work alongside Development and Corporate Support teams to review revenue targets, write or refresh underwriting copy, coordinate promotional ticket giveaways, and support community tabling or live broadcast remotes. Collaborate with Web and Marketing specialists to ensure consistent station branding, mobile app functionality, live stream optimization, and podcast distribution across all digital endpoints. Radio Programming and Technical Broadcast Operations Direct the overall broadcast air sound, format integrity, and content strategy for The North 103.3. Oversight, management of daily broadcast logs and music scheduling using station software. Oversee management of syndication intake, traffic, and file ingestion across national and regional networks. Perform direct on-air hosting duties for assigned shifts and maintain operational readiness for emergency or volunteer fill in coverage. Produce, edit, and master short form promos, station imaging, long form volunteer programs, and special public affairs segments utilizing digital audio workstations such as Adobe Audition. Manage equipment workflows and off-site access to ensure continuous broadcast continuity and prompt troubleshooting. Team Leadership, Volunteer Management and Community Training Coordinate with HR in recruitment and onboarding of radio staff and volunteers. Train, schedule, and supervise staff, community volunteer and student DJs as well as community volunteer show hosts. Direct and mentor student broadcast training initiatives including Road Salt Radio, providing regular air checks, technical coaching, and operational supervision. Foster a positive, accountable, and inclusive studio environment that champions diverse regional voices and cultural programming. Station Administration, Budgeting and Regulatory Compliance Protect the broadcast licenses through strict enforcement of FCC rules, EAS protocol readiness, and completion of quarterly FCC public file reporting. Manage the radio operational budget, monitor departmental expenditures, approve timecards, and leave requests via Gusto, and deliver regular performance forecasts. Operate or coordinate board coverage for civic community programming including live Duluth City Council broadcasts and remote events. Required Skills and Qualifications Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent time management skills. Three plus years of progressive leadership experience in radio programming, station management, and broadcast operations. Demonstrated experience with modern radio automation systems. Demonstrated track record of cross departmental collaboration, specifically in contributing to fundraising drives, corporate underwriting support, or joint multimedia projects. Proven ability to recruit, train, and mentor volunteer on air talent and student broadcasters. Strong understanding of FCC broadcast regulations, obscenity and indecency standards, and quarterly compliance filings. Bachelor's degree in communications, Media Studies, Broadcast Journalism, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred Skills Experience within a dual licensee or joint public media organization spanning radio, television, and digital platforms. Proficiency in digital audio editing and mastering software such as Adobe Audition and Marketron. Experience with public media syndication and content distribution services preferred. Familiarity with remote broadcasting technology, live audio mixing boards, and remote desktop tools such as ScreenConnect. Understanding of digital streaming metrics, web content management system publishing, and podcast packaging. Essential Physical Demands and Working Environment Operate studio console controls and electronic broadcast hardware, manipulate digital interfaces, and sit or stand for extended periods. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain insurability standards required by the organization's insurance provider and be willing to travel for occasional station events and live remotes.
