Siouxland Public Media is an award-winning, nationally recognized NPR -affiliate licensed to Western Iowa Tech Community College. We are seeking a creative, ambitious, talented journalist to join our team. As a public station, our mission is to tell the stories of people living in our community. We seek to expand the understanding of what life is like in Siouxland, the peculiar challenges we face, the conflicts and bridges that weave us together, and how we are changing. In particular, we cover politics, economics, culture, and the environment. As a reporter, you will be responsible for setting and carrying out our news-coverage strategy. Stories will be distributed both on-air and online. As a part of Siouxland Public Media, you may be required to announce and participate in events as needed. Being a part of Western Iowa Tech Community College and Siouxland Public Media means that you are an ambassador of the college and station. During our spring and fall fund drives, you will be expected to work closely with the guests and volunteers.
RESPONSIBITIES
: Hard News & Enterprise Reporting
  • Cover local and regional beats such as government, education, public safety, business, and community impact.
  • Produce daily spot news stories and in-depth enterprise reports.
  • Respond quickly and accurately to breaking news.
  • Cultivate diverse sources and develop long-term reporting projects.
  • Pursue accountability and investigative stories that reflect the station's public service mission. Broadcast Production
  • Write clear, concise scripts for daily newscasts.
  • Produce high-quality audio stories that meet professional public radio standards.
  • Voice and deliver stories on-air as assigned.
  • Meet daily and long-term deadlines consistently. Digital & Multimedia Reporting
  • Publish timely web versions of broadcast stories.
  • Contribute digital-first content when appropriate.
  • Create multimedia elements such as photos, short-form audio, and social media posts to extend story reach.
  • Use digital analytics and audience feedback to refine coverage and engagement strategies. Editorial Standards & Collaboration
  • Work closely with the News Director on story selection, framing, and editorial standards.
  • Participate in weekly editorial meetings and pitch original story ideas.
  • Ensure all reporting meets high standards of accuracy, fairness, balance, and ethical journalism. Community Engagement
  • Represent the station professionally in the community.
  • Engage with listeners to understand issues of public concern.
  • Build trust through responsive, respectful reporting. Ideal Qualifications
  • Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, audio production, and interview skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, small newsroom environment.
  • Commitment to ethical journalism and public service.
  • Comfort balancing daily news demands with deeper enterprise reporting.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
: Excellent computer skills: Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Mac operating systems All candidates are required to submit a sample of their work and a sample pitch of a story relevant to our audience. This is a full-time, grade 6, support position working Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with an hourly wage of $23.91. Benefits include health, dental, long-term disability and group life insurance, retirement, tuition waiver, vacation, sick leave and holidays. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related field. Journalistic work or related work experience. Proficiency in English and another language is a plus. (Amharic, Arabic, Laotian, French, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tigrinya, or Vietnamese) Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands Our reporters must operate and transport broadcast news production equipment, including audio and video recording packs. Stories often require reporters to work outdoors and in challenging environments.
