10+ years Position Overview We are seeking a highly experienced Athleisure / Activewear Technical Designer to support the development and execution of our growing athleisure collection. This is a senior-level, hands-on technical design role for someone with deep experience in activewear, performance apparel, stretch fabrics, garment construction and fit. The position can be structured on a freelance or contract basis with flexible timing, with engagement centered around each seasonal line launch and its development, fitting and approval milestones. The right candidate should be able to step into the program with minimal training, work independently, and take technical ownership from design handoff through production-ready approval. Key Responsibilities Own technical development of athleisure and activewear styles from design handoff through production approval. Create, review and maintain complete technical packages/tech packs. Develop detailed measurement specifications, construction details, stitching requirements, seam specifications, BOM information and technical callouts. Establish and maintain accurate graded specifications and size standards. Conduct and lead fit sessions, evaluate samples and provide clear, actionable fit comments. Review prototypes, fit samples, PP samples and TOP samples throughout the development process. Evaluate fit, balance, construction, stretch, recovery, compression, functionality and overall garment performance. Understand how fabric content, GSM/weight, stretch percentage, recovery and shrinkage affect garment specifications and finished fit. Work with nylon/spandex, cotton/spandex, performance knits, rib, mesh, stretch wovens and other technical fabrics. Establish appropriate construction methods for leggings, sports bras, tanks, fitted tops, tees, shorts, skirts, jackets, layering pieces and coordinated athleisure sets. Review and specify activewear construction including flatlock, coverstitch, binding, elastic application, waistband construction and other performance-specific techniques. Communicate technical corrections directly and effectively with domestic and overseas factories. Partner with Design, Product Development, Fabric, Patternmaking, Production and Quality teams to resolve technical issues. Identify potential fit, construction, quality and production risks before bulk production. Maintain technical consistency and fit standards across the collection. Work within established development calendars and meet agreed-upon deadlines for each line launch. Required Qualifications & Experience Minimum 10+ years of Technical Design experience required. Significant direct experience in athleisure, activewear and/or performance apparel. Experience working with established activewear, athleisure or performance apparel brands strongly preferred. Advanced understanding of garment construction, patternmaking, grading and fit. Strong technical knowledge of 4-way stretch and high-stretch fabrics. Extensive experience fitting close-to-body and performance garments. Strong understanding of stretch, recovery, compression, shrinkage and fabric behavior. Ability to identify and independently troubleshoot complex fit and construction issues. Experience working directly with both domestic and overseas factories. Strong understanding of production development from prototype through TOP. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and experience working with technical design and/or PLM systems. Highly organized and capable of managing multiple styles and deadlines simultaneously. Able to work independently with limited supervision while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams. Contract Structure & Availability This role does not need to follow a traditional full-time schedule. We are open to an experienced Technical Designer working as a: Freelancer Independent Contractor Part-Time Consultant Project-Based Technical Designer The engagement will be structured primarily by seasonal line launch, with hours and involvement increasing during key development, fitting and approval periods. Flexible scheduling is available; however, the Technical Designer must be able to meet agreed-upon development deadlines and be available for critical fit sessions and line-launch milestones. Candidates may maintain other clients or projects provided they can meet the agreed scope, timing and deliverables. Los Angeles-area candidates are strongly preferred due to the need for in-person fittings at key stages of development.
