Work Schedule

Standard Hours:

Up to 19.5 hours per week. Shifts are scheduled during office hours

(between 8:00 AM

• 5:00 PM) or in the evening to support events and productions.
  

Evening Schedule:

Some evening work is required to support concerts and productions.

During these periods, shifts will start later in the day (e.g., 4:00 PM

• 8:30 PM or 5:00 PM
• 
  10:00 PM). Daily hours will flex (some days longer, some shorter) to generally maintain a
  19.5-hour work week.
  

Weekend Requirements:

Occasional Saturday work is required for performances and

strikes (approximately 4 within the academic year).

Advance Notice:

Schedules are established approximately six months in advance,

providing predictable scheduling.

Location:

This is a 100% on-site position.

Work Calendar

12 Month. Work is largely seasonal, with the majority taking place during the academic calendar.

T is substantially less work taking place over summer.

Job Summary

Arnette Scott Ward Performing Arts Center Summary

We operate three distinct venues: a 299-seat main stage theatre, an intimate black box, and an

outdoor amphitheater. We primarily support our performing arts academic programs alongside

some community rentals. A typical season includes 3 main stage productions, 3 black box shows,

2 dance concerts, and roughly 50 smaller concerts, recitals, and events. While our calendar is

active, we intentionally build in downtime between events so our staff has time for

maintenance, reflection, and planning.

At the Arnette Scott Ward Performing Arts Center, we believe that producing excellent live

events shouldn't come at the cost of our staff's well-being. We deliberately structure our

schedules to provide enough time to get the work done without burdening our team. When you

work with us, you can expect:

Protected Weekends:

We essentially never work weekends, with the exception of

about four Saturdays per season for matinees and show strikes.

• Sensible Hours;

Rest:

We don't do exhausting overnights. We enforce hard stops at

10:30 PM for tech and dress rehearsals, and 11:00 PM for strikes. We also ensure a

minimum 12-hour turnaround between daily shifts.

No Mandatory Overtime:

We plan our production calendars deliberately to avoid

putting the burden of overtime on our staff and technicians.

Holidays Off:

We endeavor to honor all college holidays provided to our students,

meaning our staff gets to enjoy those well-deserved breaks as well.

You will be joining a supportive, dedicated team of peers—including our Scene Shop Assistant,

Props Assistant, Costume Shop Assistant, Lighting/Sound Assistant, and Marketing; Box Office

Assistant, as well as a team of overhire technicians and lead staff—who share the goal of creating

great art in a healthy, low-stress environment.

The Sound Engineer is an essential and highly valued member of the Performing Arts Center

Operations team. Reporting to the Lighting/Sound Supervisor, this position serves as the

department's subject matter expert for audio, coordinating the use of audio production equipment

and facilities across all venues. This role is responsible for the technical

realization of complex sound designs and live mixing.

In conjunction with the performing arts center team, this position plays a key role in creating and

maintaining the working environment in the theatre. They will also work closely with actors,

designers, students, staff, and faculty to shepherd a production process that is supportive and

sustainable.

Essential Functions

• Provides live audio support to assigned academic programs.
  
• Acts as the primary mix engineer for events and productions, including musical theatre,
  concerts, and dance performances.
  
• Coordinates and executes the setup, signal routing, and striking of audio and video
  equipment for academic programs.
  
• Serves as the primary technical resource for all sound-related needs, ensuring high
• quality audio outcomes for a variety of events.
  
• Makes equipment recommendations and further develops our repertoire of sound
  techniques.

• Supports the Lighting/Sound Supervisor with the equipment setup, operation, and strike.
  
• Assists with the setup and strike of lighting, sound, and video equipment
  
• Serves as a technician or board operator during events, tech rehearsals and
  performances; assists with the safe load-in and strike of technical elements.
  
• Participates in backstage operations and ensures technical elements are in a fully realized
  and safe condition for use by performers and students.
  
• Assists in performing routine maintenance and repairs on lighting, sound, and video
  equipment to maintain operational readiness.
  
• Trains part-time staff and students in the basic operation of lighting, sound, and
  video systems.

• Creates sound reinforcement documentation, cues, and other paperwork.
  
• Develops comprehensive documentation, including mic plots, TheatreMix cues, wiring
  and routing diagrams, and technical schedules.
  
• Coordinates RF frequencies for wireless microphones and other RF production
  equipment
  
• Programs QLab to support events and productions.

Desired Qualifications

1. 2 years experience mixing live audio for musical theatre and a variety of musical genres (Jazz,

Rock, Classical).

2. Significant hands-on experience in sound engineering (including: wiring, routing,

patching, and split systems for monitor engineering)

3. Advanced knowledge of digital and analog signal flow, including Dante.

4. Knowledge of AV networking basics.

5. Proficiency with Allen and Heath consoles and QLab for audio playback and automation.

6. Demonstrated ability to mentor students or lead technical crews in an educational

environment.

7. Comfortable with all aspects of sound check and audio processing for live sound (Gain,

HPF, EQ, Compression, Gate)

8. Experience working with students in an educational setting

Working Conditions:

Work may include frequent exposure to loud noises associated with

performances, construction, or maintenance, or other activities related to the area of

assignment. Work may include sitting for extended periods of time and the performance of

technical office work requiring prolonged focus and attention to detail. Some assignments may

be entirely office based and not involve field-based work tasks.

Work Schedule:

Some assignments may involve activities that can occur during non-standard

work hours. The ability to work evening hours, some weekends, or otherwise non-standard hours

is required to perform the essential duties of this position.
