A1 (Lead) Audio Engineer Department of Production - Audio Engineering | Part-Time $25/hour Job Description The A1 (Lead Audio Engineer) holds primary responsibility for the artistic and technical execution of all live sound. The position may cover a single production or event, or the full run of performances of a designated show, as specified in a production schedule issued by CM Performing Arts Center. Artistic ownership — refining, maintaining, and executing the show's mix, balance, and sonic character in collaboration with the director and music director; System authority — overseeing signal flow, gain structure, system tuning, RF (wireless) coordination and frequency management, and the health of the entire audio system; Live troubleshooting — diagnosing and resolving audio failures in real time during live performance without interruption to the production; Specific Responsibilities The A1 must act professionally with the highest industry standards for live theatrical audio production: Mix all assigned performances, rehearsals, and events from the front-of-house (FOH) position, including live mixing of vocals, orchestra/pit, playback, and effects as required by the production. Set up, place, dress, and strike all microphones, including wireless (RF) body microphones, area microphones, and pit microphones, as required for each performance or event. Conduct thorough microphone checks and line checks prior to each performance or event, verifying that all inputs, outputs, monitors, RF systems, and communication systems are fully operational before the scheduled house-open or downbeat. Manage and mix the live pit/orchestra, including coordination with the music director and pit musicians regarding monitor needs, balance, and blend with the stage. Maintain, care for, and troubleshoot all audio equipment throughout the engagement, and promptly report any damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment to the Executive Artistic Director, Director of Production or the Technical Operations Manager. Complete post-performance cleanup and shutdown of the audio department, including proper storage of microphones, powering down of consoles and systems, and leaving the FOH position, pit, and backstage audio areas clean, organized, and show-ready. The A1 must arrive by the designated call time and must complete all duties, including cleanup, by the designated end time, unless an extension is authorized in advance. Qualifications Demonstrated experience as a lead/A1 audio engineer in live theatrical or performance production. Proficiency with front-of-house mixing consoles, signal flow, gain structure, and system tuning. Expertise in wireless (RF) microphone coordination and frequency management. Ability to diagnose and resolve audio failures in real time during live performance. Strong collaboration and communication skills for working with directors, music directors, and production leadership. Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to meet deadlines.
