Job Description

Senior Technical Writer Position Summary The Senior Technical Writer is responsible for developing and revising complex technical documentation supporting the operation, maintenance, repair, and marketing of company products and systems. This role works closely with engineering teams, customers, and other technical stakeholders to translate complex engineering information into clear, accurate, and usable documentation. The position supports a variety of technical publications, including product and functional descriptions, operating procedures, fault-isolation procedures, maintenance and repair instructions, illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs), reports, proposals, and other product-related documentation. The Senior Technical Writer may also lead smaller technical writing assignments or portions of larger projects. Key Responsibilities Create, revise, and maintain complex technical documentation for company products, equipment, and systems. Develop operating procedures, maintenance and repair procedures, fault-isolation documentation, functional descriptions, illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs), reports, proposals, and related technical materials. Research systems and equipment and consult with engineering personnel to obtain and validate technical information. Analyze complex engineering designs, drawings, specifications, terminology, and other technical data. Translate complex engineering information into clear and understandable documentation for technical and non-technical audiences. Ensure documentation complies with customer requirements, government specifications, engineering standards, and established language and formatting requirements. Evaluate illustrations and graphics and coordinate the creation or modification of visual materials as needed. Participate in onsite and offsite reviews and validation activities for technical writing assignments. Support the development and testing of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs). Provide project time and cost estimates and support delivery of documentation within established schedules and budgets. Interface directly with customers regarding project content and technical issues as required. Provide guidance to cross-functional team members and participate in technical problem-solving discussions. Provide input regarding documentation format, style, and overall design. Lead small technical writing projects or portions of larger assignments as required. Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, technical publication practices, tools, and technologies. Maintain a safe work environment and comply with applicable safety policies and procedures. Required Skills & Qualifications Strong working knowledge of hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and system operations. Experience developing complex mechanical, electrical, and/or operator-focused technical documentation. Ability to understand and interpret complex engineering designs, drawings, terminology, and technical specifications. Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear language for non-engineering audiences. Experience with XML authoring tools such as Arbortext Epic Editor, Oxygen XML Editor, or similar platforms. Working knowledge of technical publication and page-production software. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Professional or similar PDF markup software. Knowledge of Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) functionality and development processes. Strong technical writing, editing, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills. Ability to work effectively with cross-functional and geographically dispersed teams. Strong problem-solving and communication skills. Customer-facing communication and customer service skills. Ability to manage assignments to established schedules and budgets. Familiarity with applicable military and commercial technical documentation standards. Education & Experience Bachelors degree in a relevant technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates relying on an equivalent combination of education and experience should possess five additional years of relevant experience . Previous defense industry experience is required. Preferred Experience Validation and verification of technical procedures, including on-vehicle experience. Content Management System (CMS) experience. Experience with IETM markup languages and development processes. Experience supporting military vehicles, defense systems, or other complex electromechanical equipment.
