Position Summary The Adult Language Learning (ALL) Intern supports language instruction for refugee and immigrant clients by assisting with classroom instruction and program support. Under the guidance of the English Program Coordinator, the intern teaches three classes per week and prepares or adapts lesson plans and learning materials aligned with program goals. The intern collaborates with classroom volunteers to meet diverse language levels and fosters a respectful, inclusive, and culturally sensitive learning environment. This position is responsible for upholding the International Institute's mission, vision, goals, and objectives.
Details of Responsibilities Essential Responsibilities:
1. (70%) Classroom Instruction and curriculum development. This work may include but is not limited to: Provide classroom instruction. Assess student language competence and needs including creation of pre- and post-tests. Prepare lesson plans that meet students' needs. Adapt and prepare appropriate teaching materials. Complete required paperwork (lesson plans, attendance records, test results). Administer student evaluations as required by funder. Reporting to the English Program Coordinator concerning student progress and classroom needs. 2. (20%) Relationship Building and Student Support. This work may include but is not limited to: Foster a respectful, inclusive, and encouraging classroom environment for adult learners from diverse backgrounds. Build trust and rapport with refugee learners through patience, encouragement, and trauma-informed communication. Support student confidence, participation, and integration into the learning community. Create a supportive and positive classroom environment.
Additional Responsibilities:
3. (10%) Performs other tasks as required. This work may include, but is not limited to: Interacting with community members related to current projects and initiatives; Participating in departmental and organizational meetings and events; Performing other assigned duties as necessary for the successful operation of the organization.
Current student or recent university/college graduate in TESOL, MASLA, Linguistics, or Applied Linguistics programs. Strong command of the English language; prior tutoring or teaching experience is a plus.
