Position Summary:
To provide learning activities appropriate to the age of the students and aligning with the MN State Standards for Arts Education in order to develop an interest in and ability for creative expression and artistic literacy. Special Education experience required. Ability to differentiate learning activities for students with a wide range of cognitive and behavioral needs. To develop an understanding and appreciation of art in each student.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead students through a variety of art activities in order to improve their self esteem and their social and emotional well-being. The ability to work with students with a wide range of disabilities. Uses MN State Standards for Arts to plan units and lessons in the area of visual arts to meet the needs, interests and cultures of students. Differentiates curriculum and adapts resources and materials specific to the cognitive and behavioral needs of the students. Demonstrates and assists students in using different techniques and media to develop art works aligned to their artistic abilities. Informs students about cultural and historical influences on art. Assess and evaluate student performance on a regular basis. Plans and presents art displays. Creates a positive learning environment through the establishment of good rapport with students and staff, and encouraging open discussion. Understands and implements School-wide Discipline Policy and how it relates to special education students. Collaborates with classroom teachers to assure student grade-level, IEP, and individual needs are being met. Demonstrates familiarity with assistive technology and other forms of technology such as interactive boards. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Current Minnesota licensure in the area of Visual Arts K-12. Licensed in Special Education a plus. Experience with children with disabilities and/or elementary-aged children is preferred. Demonstrates culturally relevant pedagogy in the three areas of academic achievement, cultural competence, and sociopolitical consciousness. Minimum of 2 years working in a special education setting. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of and passion for visual art. Excellent oral, written and spoken communication skills. Ability to work in a self-directed manner with limited supervision Ability to interact well with internal staff, students and parents/guardians. Detail oriented, flexible and with a sense of accountability and ownership for work results. Professional demeanor and appearance with a positive attitude. Excellent planning and organizational skills. Experience with the following computer applications: Mac equipment, classroom applications and software. Ability to maintain status of "not disqualified" upon completion of criminal background and MN disciplinary incidence research. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on occasion or be able to move quickly to contain a student. BIPOC, Veterans, LBGTQIA2S+, and People with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.
